Electronic signs to unblock busy roads

TRAFFIC congestion has been eased, thanks to electronic signs diverting motorists away from Southend seafront during the summer.

Southend Council has paid for extra electronic signs on roads into the town centre.

The boards let daytrippers know the capacity of the seafront car parks so they can use other facilities, to stop the seafront from descending into heavy congestion.

Independent Martin Terry, councillor responsible for transport, said: “Southend is open for business, so anything we can do to improve local business we will try.

“We are trying to optimise the capacity we have because we have thousands of people coming into the town during hot days which is great, but it causes a gridlock scenario.

“We want to manipulate the traffic because we’ve seen the seafront car parks packed, but the other ones in the town empty – and it seems to have worked so far.”

Mr Terry added he regularly sees traffic backed up around the Kursaal and Eastern Esplanade during busy summer periods.

The extra signs tell motorists which locations are full and which car parks have spaces.

Victoria Avenue and several locations along the A127 are some of the sites that have benefitted from the extra hardware.

In total, there are now 21 in the town centre.

Paul Thompson, chairman of the seafront traders’ association, has long called for action.

He said: “At the moment it seems to be working and it is good of the new coalition to have listened to us traders.

“We have pushed this to get a better use out of our town centre car parks, and it has really helped ease congestion on the seafront too.”

Mr Terry added that a new car park, to be built in Queensway, next to the Quantock tower block, is shaping up.

He said the new car park should be open in the coming months

Ah - of course traffic and parking are never a problem in Southend.
I mean - Look at the fantastic job SBC made with the "improvements" to Victoria gateway and Cuckoo Corner...... and don't forget everyone with the planned 4-way traffic lights still to come at the Tesco roundabout things can only get ...... er.... even worse!

Has Martin Terry actually tried to navigate the new queensway junction when its rife with tourists who don't understand the road layout. When will he get lines painted on the road so people actually see there are two turning lanes. I drive through the junction on a regular basis and i have now come to expect to be cut up by a vehicle in the other lane traveling from queensway onto Prince Ave. I also ride a motorbike and have ended up having to mount the pavement to avoid a collision.
Apparently, according to the council, painting lines on the road would make the intersection "ugly". Yet they can paint lines everywhere else just not on a busy intersection.

If the council are serious about helping local businesses perhaps they should reduce parking fees. Also, while they are desperate to keep cars out of the town the shops will suffer as you can't carry too much if you have to get the bus or train home!!!

Southend all year round has traffic problems, every twist and turn there are road works.

the road layouts are an absolute joke, people don't understand them an often end up in the wrong lane, people cut you up because they are unclear of where they should be .. the design of these roads was planned after a very boozy christmas party I guess!

I have got so fed up I now shop out of town, where parking is free, and avoid the sea front like the plague!

Southend needs total demolition and be redesigned by someone who knows what the public what.

It will get even better along the 127 and A13 when we have another million for the airport............
