A NEW swimming and fitness centre is on track for its October launch.

Construction work on Wickford’s new swimming pool and fitness centre is on schedule for October’s grand opening.

Contractors are finalising the twostorey extension, which will feature a 65-station gym, group exercise and cycling studios and changing facilities.

The £2.4 million scheme has already seen an upgrade to the 25 metre pool, with new showers and locker rooms.

Councillor Phil Turner, Basildon Council leader said: “It’s terrific we’ve been able to invest in this wonderful facility, especially as it’s been extremely popular with local people for 40 years.

“We need to make Wickford town centre a place where people and families in particular want to be, so it’s important we create excellent leisure facilities.

“I’m looking forward to welcoming new users from Wickford, and perhaps further afield, to try out the facilities on offer. Let’s hope many will be encouraged to take up active pursuits.”

Basildon Council is working with its leisure partner, Everyone Active, to transform the facility on Market Avenue into the new Wickford Swim and Fitness centre.

It is envisaged the centre will attracting more visitors toWickford and boost the local economy.
