A WOMAN who lost her leg in a horrific motorbike crash has taken her first steps on a prosthetic leg just twomonths after the accident.

Kerry Waters, 29, of Alexander Road, Ashingdon, lost part of her right leg in the crash, in Brays Lane, Canewdon, on Friday, June 27.

She was close to being decapitated by an electricity pole wire, but thanks to her helmet strap catching it, she managed to survive.

Through sheer determination, she has surprised her family by walking for the first time with a prosthetic leg.

She now hopes to walk part of the 10km race Run to the Beat, in London, on September 14, to raise money for the Essex and East of England Air Ambulance.

Kerry, who was a dental nurse before the crash, said: “I don’t have the words to describe how amazing it was to stand up on two feet for the first time since the crash.

“I have never wanted anything more in my life, it was great.

“I was filmed so I could see myself and it was amazing.

“I didn’t think it would happen so quickly.”

Kerry is in rehabilitation in Queen Mary’s Hospital, in Roehampton, west London.

There she will learn to walk first by holding on to bars, then by using sticks, before finally walking unaided.

She said: “You just have to have determination.

“Some people sit around just chatting, but you have to get on with it.

“It’s been really hard going, getting to this stage, because I was having to watch everyone else around me walking while I was still in a wheelchair.

“Last week was really tough, I thought this is never going to happen, but suddenly it all happened so quickly.

“It’s really exciting. I don’t know how long it will take to get walking properly, but I amhoping for it to happen within a month.

“I have had my down days, but you have to carry on. Before the accident, I took life for granted and now I have to live it.

“I wish people realised how precious life is, this has definitely changed my view.”

Her sister, Louise Jeakins, 23, of Rectory Road, Hawkwell, will complete a skydive with her cousin Tony Holland and father-in-law Bill Jeakins, to raise money for Kerry’s personal fund, One Step at a Time, which will fund a better leg for Kerry in the future.
