FED-UP residents are furious parts of their roads are still covered in holes almost a month after they were dug up for gas main replacement work.

Families in six roads in Corringham have had trouble parking outside their homes for four weeks, because National Grid is carrying out the vital work.

Residents in Princess Road, Goldsmith Avenue, Monks Haven, Bibby Close, Hark Road and Giffords Cross Road, say theywere all affected by workers digging up part of the road, then moving on without filling the road surface in.

David Geddes, 68, of Giffords Cross Road, says the work has created chaos for all residents.

He said: “I understand work needs to be carried out, but it is the way they are doing it.

“They dig up one road and then, without filling the hole, they move on to another road. It has been absolutely chaotic.

“It’s a residential area with children and cars. It’s hard to get in and out of the road and kids can’t play out safely.

“We shouldn’t have to put up with this.”

A spokesman for National Grid confirmed gas mains replacement work were being carried out in Corringham.

He said: “Ageing gas mains are being replaced with new tough pipes which should last for many years.

“This essential work will help ensure the local community continue enjoying safe and reliable gas supplies for cooking and heating.”

Work was completed on Monday, in Princess Road, Goldsmith Avenue and Monks Haven.

The work is due to completed in Bibby Close and Hark Road later this month, while the work in Giffords Cross Road, is due to be completed in November.

Mr Geddes added: “The fact that work on my road will continue into next month is a bit of a joke. It’s a main road.”

If people have questions or concerns they should call the National Grid helpline on 0800 0965678.
