TWO south Essex businesswomen have been shortlisted for a national wedding award.

Amanda Turner, 28, who runs Canvey-based Blitzin Hair Designs, and florist Claire Weeks, from Benfleet, are in with a chance of bagging a top prize at the Hitched Breakthrough Awards.

Mrs Turner decided to set up her own business after taking a break from her career to have children.

Her philosophy is to keep prices affordable, and it has proved a big hit with brides trying to juggle their wedding budget.

Mrs Turner, 28, said: “I would rather work more hours and keep my prices down to make my services available to a wider range of clients. Everyone should be able to afford to look and feel their best on their big day.

“I am absolutely delighted to get shortlisted in this national award as there is so much talent out there. I entered with no expectations whatsoever and was completely surprised to get this far.”

Mrs Weeks first took up floristry 18 years ago, but recently took the leap of going it alone.

She is making a name for herself in the industry.

Recent projects include work at an international historic motoring event at Hampton Court Palace and a showjumping event at London’s Horse Guard Parade ground.

Mrs Weeks said: “I’m thrilled to be a finalist in the awards as there is a lot of talent out there.”

The awards, run by wedding website hitched.co.uk, recognise companies which have been in business since June 2011.

Categories include wedding cake design, wedding floristry, and wedding hair styling.
