A SUSPECTED attempted burglar was caught by police after eagle-eyed residents spotted a man acting suspiciously.

Police have praised the residents for their vigilance after dealing with nine reported breakins on Canvey in the last two weeks.

The alarm was raised just after 10.30am on Wednesday when the victim saw a man approaching her front door in Lakeside Path, Canvey, looking suspicious and as though he was talking on his phone.

Shortly afterwards the man climbed over her garden fence and appeared at her back door.

He left the scene without entering the house, but police were already on the case. As officers began tracing the suspect, the victim’s partner kept an eye on him, informing officers of where he had gone.

It wasn’t long before the man was arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary.

Chief Insp Lesley Ford, district commander for Rochford and Castle Point, said: “This is an excellent example of how the vigilance of the public can be a catalyst for police to focus their resources in the right areas and arrest burglars close in close proximity to an offence.

“This provides the very best opportunity for the police to gather evidence with a view to prosecuting those who commit such crime.”

Chief Insp Ford has warned residents to be on the lookout for suspicious activity after nine breakins between October 8 and yesterday on the island.

Jewellery and electrical items have been taken during the burglaries, which are largely taking place between 9am and 6pm.

Raiders have been gaining entry largely through rear doors and windows so Ch Insp Ford urged residents to keep their homes and gardens secure and note serial numbers of valuable items. She said: “We understand burglary can be a distressing experience.

“The increase in the number of burglaries over the last couple of weeks on Canvey is something youmight expect a bit at this time of year.

But I appeal to residents to report anybody or any vehicle they feel is out of character, suspicious or unknown to ensure our patrols are focused and can take appropriate action.

“We have had a number of inquiries ongoing and are progressing potential leads.

“No one has been arrested for the burglaries so far.”

As the Echo went to press the man arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary was still being questioned by police.
