VOLUNTEERS are urgently needed to help support single parents and struggling families.

Castle Point Association of Voluntary Services is looking for caring individuals with life skills and parenting experience to pass on to families in need of support.

Ros Allen, volunteer and mentor co-ordinator at the association of voluntary services, said: “Parenting can be a difficult job, and it can be even more demanding as a single parent. Ann, a volunteer family peer mentor, is currently supporting a single mum and her five children, helping them cope with the challenges of daily life.”

The family were referred to the service when the youngest child was showing signs of anxiety and struggling at school. As the secondary school transition was fast approaching, it was felt they would benefit from the support of a volunteer.

Ros said: “With Ann’s help and advice, simple changes were made within the home such as organising mealtimes and delegating chores to the older children, allowing mum time after work for herself and with her family. Ann has also helped them gain control of their finances.”

Volunteers need to be able to commit to a few hours each week for six months. Full training and support will be provided.
