A MAN has been charged with attacking his grandmother with a chair leg in her Southend home.

William Dobinson, 40, allegedly used the weapon to attack 83-year-old Stella Dobinson, in Brettenham Drive, leaving her with a fractured eye socket, fractured cheekbone and deflated lung.

Dobinson allegedly went to the house in the Southchurch area at about 9.30am on Tuesday.

Police and paramedics arrived around lunchtime to discover the elderly woman with severe facial injuries.

She was taken to Southend Hospital with non life-threatening, but serious injuries.

Police arrested Dobinson, of CarseyClose, Ramsden Heath, near Billericay, on the same day.

He was charged with causing grievous bodily harm and detained in custody to appear in Southend Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Wearing a red, prison-issue sweatshirt, Dobinson spoke only to confirm his name when he appeared in court.

He sat looking at the floor as Lesley Chipps, prosecuting, read out brief details of his grandmother’s injuries.

She said: “This is a domestic incident, the complainant being the grandmother of the defendant.

“The injuries are a fractured left cheekbone, fractured eye socket and deflated lung.”

There was no application for bail.

Dobinson was remanded in custody until a plea and case management hearing at Basildon Crown Court on February 11.
