TOWIE star James “Arg” Argent will be turning on the Christmas lights in Rochford this Sunday.

Organised by the Rochford Parish Council and Chamber of Trade, the big switch-on is part of the town’s annual Christmas festival.

Not only will Towie fans be in for a treat with Arg doing the honours and lighting up Rochford, but boyband tribute act 1DX – the One Direction Experience, will also be performing for the crowd.

The festival begins at 12.30pm with market stalls, carol singing, a Santa’s grotto and a youth band marching up West Street and into the Town Square.

Live entertainment kicks off at 1pm and doesn’t stop until Arg flicks the switch at 5pm.

Last month Arg was suspended from the ITV reality show for his erratic behaviour, but organisers are delighted to have him visit.

Sue Harper, Chamber of Trade secretary, said: “We are very lucky and very happy to have James turning on our lights – we are all looking forward to it.

“The event is kept going by volunteers, to whom we are very thankful.

“We just couldn’t do it without them.

“It’s a not-for-profit event and free for visitors. It’s all about getting people into our town to see what is on offer. Any proceeds are given to local charities, so not only does this give an event to the town, but it helps gives back to charities in the area as well.”

Aside from the entertainment, there will be a hog roast, hot chestnuts, a face painter, carousels and performances from local schools.

The Santa’s grotto is located in the Day Centre, in Back Lane, where there will also be refreshments.

In the WI Hall, there will be a display of entries into a children’s primary school Christmas painting competition.

This year’s chosen charities at the Rochford WI, dementia charity Peaceful Place, Essex Fire and Rescue Service’s Firebreak and the town’s Old People’s Day Centre.
