FIRE crews were called to a house fire in Eastwood late last night.

One crew from each of Leigh and Rayleigh Weir fire stations attended the semi-detached property in Rowan Walk shortly before 10.45pm.

Upon their arrival the ground floor of the house was completely smoke logged and the utility room was 50 per cent alight.

A woman and her two young children had been alerted to the fire by their smoke detector and had evacuated the building without suffering any injuries or smoke inhalation.

Crews wore breathing apparatus and used one hose reel to extinguish the blaze by shortly after 11pm.

Dean Riley, sub officer at Leigh fire station, said: "The utility room was destroyed and the house was smoke logged.

"I imagine they will be looking for alternative accommodation over Christmas."
