A HERO police officer made himself a human shield to protect the public from a knifeman terrorising people in a shopping centre.

The thug was shouting and waving the carving knife at passers-by in the Victoria shopping centre, Southend, earlier this month.

The off-duty officer, who works for the Met, was in the centre with his family and friends and confronted the man.

The lawman even armed himself with an empty crate from a nearby fruit and vegetable stall for protection.

Det Chief Insp Jon Burgess said: “The knifeman was creating terror. This officer quickly spotted him and despite being off-duty he went between the public and the man, putting up a human barrier.

“I strongly believe this is outstanding bravery from the officer putting the public first in an fearless act. Any amount of training can certainly help you, but bravery is the element here.”

The officer tried to speak to the man to calm him down, but he was still acting violently, making slashing movements towards the policeman.

Back-up arrived from Essex Police. Officers had to use a Taser on the knifeman, which police say demonstrated how dangerous he was.

Chief Insp Simon Anslow, district commander for Southend, said: “I am very impressed. This is where I think it shows being a police officer is a 24/7 commitment.

Something extremely dangerous happens in front of him and he takes responsibility.

“It’s not even his force. He was with his children and still he stepped in. His courage and selflessness protected the lives of other people.”

The incident happened at about 9.45pm on Tuesday, February 3.
