THREE football fans have been arrested after a mass brawl left a man with serious head injuries.

Police were called to East Street, Southend, at around 7.20pm yesterday to reports of 15 football supporters fighting in the street near the Railway pub.

A 41 year-old man, from Mildenhall in Suffolk, was found on the floor suffering from serious head injuries.

He was taken to the Royal London Hospital for specialist treatment, where he remains in a serious condition.

Police contained the disturbance using CS gas.

Two men were arrested at the scene.

A 33-year-old man from Southend was arrested on suspicion of GBH and a 47-year-old man from Cambridge was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage after the door of the pub was smashed.

Officers made a further arrest at 8.45pm in East Street following enquiries.

A 23-year-old man from Westcliff was arrested on suspicion of GBH.

The 33-year-old has now been bailed until March 24, with the 23-year-old set for his bail return on May 27.

The 47-year-old from Cambridge was arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and received a police caution.

East Street was cordoned off for forensic investigations but all scene guards have now been lifted.
