ESSEX County Council will not support plans for a development of up to 6,000 homes until more consideration is given to the impact on the area.

County Hall raised concerns in its formal response to the proposed scheme on land to the west of Laindon and east of West Horndon.

The Dunton Garden Suburb development, which would also include a train station, traveller pitches, industrial land and community facilities, is expected to help both Basildon and Brentwood councils meet their Government housing targets.

The Echo revealed earlier this month County Hall predicts Basildon will have only 22 primary school places left by 2016- 17, even before the proposed development is built. While more secondary school places are available, most of the surplus is at the Basildon Academies – seven miles from the site.

County Hall would prefer projects which affect the green belt to be passed through a local plan.

The Tory administration is also worried about a shortfall in adult social care places, and the impact of the development on local roads.

Andrew Cook, director of environment and economy at County Hall, said: β€œThe council withholds its support for any potential cross-boundary development at Dunton Garden Suburb until key pieces of evidence are publicly available for consideration.”
