Brewdog, the microbrewery founded by a former fisherman and a school mate, has added another award to its silverware collection.

The Fraserburgh-based firm beat off competition from 500 firms to win the top prize at the Prince's Scottish Youth Business Trust Young Entrepreneur of the Year awards.

The £2000 award recognises the remarkable success of a venture which is only two years old but whose products have become a familiar sight in Britain's supermarkets.

Founded by James Watt and Martin Dickie in November 2006, BrewDog has achieved annual sales of £1m for its beers, which it produces using natural ingredients.

These are stocked by chains including Sainsbury's as well as independents and shipped to 16 countries overseas.

Watt, 26, is the son of a fisherman. After a degree in law and economics, he spent two years working on his father's boat before starting the business with Dickie, whom he met at Peterhead Academy.

Dickie, 25, studied brewing at Heriot Watt University before becoming head brewer at Thornbridge brewery in Derbyshire. The pair started BrewDog with £120,000 of savings and loans from bodies including PSYBT.

Mark Beaumont, founder of Unique Care Solutions, was runner-up in the awards.
