The second phase of a roadworks programme close to Glasgow Airport will begin this week, with motorists warned to expect delays.

The White Cart viaduct on the M8 will be affected by lane closures throughout a 15-week programme to strengthen the bridge.

Average speed cameras called Specs (Speed Enforcement Camera System) will be installed to ensure more drivers stick to the reduced 40mph speed limit.

Work will begin on Saturday and a contraflow system will be in place with two lanes east and westbound open, with restrictions between junctions 27 (Arkleston) and 29 (St James).

Jim Gilmour, of road management firm Amey, said: "Last year, whilst the majority of drivers adhered to the speed limit, a small minority chose to disregard road user and workforce safety.

"Based on experience and research, we're confidant that by using Specs this year at White Cart we'll impact on congestion and increase safety. Amey will monitor journey times and flows throughout the project"

During the scheme, major bridge joints will be replaced, the road surface across the six lanes of the structure will be removed, the bridge deck rewaterproofed and the road surface relaid. Phase one, which was completed in 2006, brought vital improvements to lighting and safety barriers.
