THE boss of a popular Glasgow museum has called for it to be given a revamp as it marks its 25th birthday this week.

Burrell Collection manager Muriel King said the future of the unique collection depends on the refurbishment of its famous building in Pollok Park, on Glasgow's South Side.

Ms King said: "Looking ahead to the next 25 years, we'd like to continue to invest in the fabric of the building.

"The opening of the Burrell Collection signified Glasgow's cultural renaissance and we continue to attract millions of visitors. Maintaining the building and preserving the collection is our vision of the future.

"I think that the time is right to concentrate on the refurbishment."

Liz Cameron, chairwoman of Culture and Sport Glasgow, said: "There are parts of the building that need updating. I hope that over the next few years we will be able to look at plans to keep the collection and the building maintained."

The Queen opened the Burrell in 1983 and it has become a major tourist attraction.

It houses some of the 9000 works of art gifted to Glasgow in 1944 by Sir William Burrell and his wife, Constance, Lady Burrell.

The building was voted second in the 100 best modern buildings of the past 50 years by Prospect magazine in 2006.
