NEW Scotland rugby captain Chris Paterson wants to end their away day blues in the Six Nations, which begin with a game against England in 11 days' time.

Paterson has been named skipper by coach Frank Hadden and he accepts they have to improve in all areas if they are to challenge when the tournament kicks off next month.

"Last year we exceeded expectations if you look at the season as a whole. We beat the world champs (England) and France at home," said the winger who has won 69 caps.

"But we struggled in Wales, we struggled even more in Ireland, and it took us to 78 minutes to get an away win against Italy. That shows you how difficult is, that's what we have to focus on.

"We're aware that there is a greater expectation on us because we had two or three good results last season, but we're all excited by the challenge ahead."

BOWLS: Scot Caroline Brown plays in the women's World Matchplay singles semi-finals today against England's Carol Ashby.

Blantyre's Brown overcame American Rosa Gandara 13-4, 10-2 in the quarter-finals.

GOLF: Mobile phones will be banned from The Open at Carnoustie later this year. The R&A say players were being distracted.

CRICKET: England restricted New Zealand to 210 all out from their 50 overs in today's Commonwealth Bank Series one-day match in Adelaide.

Stand-in captain Andrew Flintoff finished with four wickets for 21 runs.

In reply, England were 56 for three after 20 overs.
