A LOLLIPOP man at one of Glasgow's worst zigzag blackspots quit his job after being driven to distraction by selfish motorists.

The Evening Times caught 11 drivers flouting the rules during 15 minutes outside Notre Dame Primary in the West End.

Our reporter watched a Ford Focus park on a zigzag and a speed bump yards from the entrance.

A recycling lorry, a mini-van, a taxi, and a Mercedes also clogged up the yellow lines as pupils left school for the day.

Crossing patroller Steven McCammon, who is forced to dodge cars every day, said the situation was the reason his predecessor resigned.

He said: "I have worked at crossings all over the city but this is by far the worst one in Glasgow.

"The last guy chucked it because he was sick of the drivers. I've had parents park over my crossing, blocking the road. It's crazy."

The school gates face on to Victoria Crescent, a narrow one-way road and mum Sharon McMillan, 40, arrived 35 minutes early to ensure a safe parking spot.

She said: "I make sure I'm here in plenty of time because I know how busy it gets.

"I see parents turn up a minute before the bell and park on the zigzags. They don't care about anyone else apart from themselves."

We watched a private hire taxi driver and a woman in a Toyota Clarissa stop outside the gates, ignoring the zigzag warning banners hanging from the school railings.

But the worst offender stopped with his front wheel on the speed bump.

The young male driver had blanked pleas from other motorists to move but when challenged by our reporter, he said: "Sorry mate, I'm from England, I'll move the car."

However, there are signs that the message is finally getting through - a taxi driver parked on the yellow lines but moved when he saw our photographer, and one mum apologised and found another parking space when she discovered her back wheel was touching the edge of the zigzags.

One mum-of-two said: "This was a quiet day by usual standards. We hope some of the drivers have seen sense." PK56PXA W492DPU RK02VRG N541RNV BP279BD SB55RBF CA56BPY SD54OFO T216SFE T76JGB
