LOOK to the skies in Essex this week to see a fantastic meteor shower.

The Lyrids meteor shower is active between April 16 and April 25 every year.

The peak is on April 22, with the best time to watch it after midnight on the 22nd, but it will be possible to view the meteor shower in Essex tonight.

Lyrids are named after the constellation Lyra and are the oldest known meteor shower - displaying between 10 and 20 meteors an hour in good weather.

The hours just before sunrise are the best time to see the shooting stars through this week and it can be seen with the naked eye.

You don't have to look in a particular direction, the meteor shower should be visible anywhere.

This year, the moon will be a crescent and will set early which means the sky will be darker for the meteor shower.

Essex Weather Centre is forecasting clear skies for this evening and dry, sunny weather until Thursday when it will turn cloudy.
