ENGINEERING work will cause disruption for train passengers travelling to and from London this weekend.

Replacement buses will be in action on the Greater Anglia line on Sunday and Monday.

The work will replicate disruption which took place during the Easter weekend last month.

London-bound services on the Southend line will terminate at Wickford, where passengers will have to get on buses to connect with the underground at Newbury Park.

The Greater Anglia mainline will also be affected, with buses running between Ingatestone and Newbury Park.

Network Rail said engineering work was taking place during the Bank Holiday weekend, when it claims passenger numbers are 20 to 30 per cent lower than usual, to minimise disruption.

People travelling from Southend Victoria, Rayleigh, Hockley and Rochford will all affected by the work, which will add about an hour to journey times to and from London.

Network Rail chief executive Mark Carne said: "We'd like to apologise to any passengers whose plans are affected, but I hope they will understand that this is a quieter time on the railway.

“We want to minimise the overall impact of these vital projects on passengers."

Trains will be running on the c2c line between Southend Central and Fenchurch Street all weekend, with a Sunday service operating on Bank Holiday Monday.
