BASILDON Council will not be required to replace gates, walls and fences at Dale Farm when the land is returned to green fields.

The authority was originally told in 2011, fences would have to be put back after clearance work at the former traveller site.

But this has now been overruled by the High Court.

A council spokesman said: “Dale Farm still rests in private ownership and the land remains in the same condition as it was left after the council’s direct action to remove unlawful development in 2011.

“The council has always been committed to restoring the land to a condition in keeping with its green belt status.”

Basildon Council has not yet set a date to clean up the site, but has described the ruling as an “important step”.

Travellers were evicted from Dale Farm, in Crays Hill, in October 2011.
