Race-hate row over election leaflet

A TORY candidate has been accused of pandering to extremists by saying asylum seekers should not be given council homes in an election flyer.

Conservative Central Office has investigated following complaints over pamphlets dropped across Vange by Luke Mackenzie.

Last year, the Echo revealed the Commission for Racial Equality accused Basildon Tories of discrimination for flagging up the issue of asylum seekers in election literature.

Now the decision to promote the fact Basildon Council will not allow asylum seekers to join its housing list has again come under fire.

Mr Mackenzie is standing against the council's only ethnic minority member, Labour's Danny Nandanwar, as well as the BNP.

His brochure states: "I support the Conservative policy of giving council housing to Basildon citizens and not being used to home asylum seekers."

It also claims the Govern-ment is encouraging record immigration.

Mr Mackenzie, who at 21 would be the youngest councillor at Basildon if elected, defended the wording and said he "deplored" the politics of far-right parties like the BNP.

He said: "I support multi culturalism, but it is only fair Basildon houses go to Basildon people first regardless of their ethnic background."

However, Allan Davies, Basildon Labour group deputy leader, described it as propoganda to stir up race hate and segregation.

He said: "Mr Mackenzie does appear to lean further to the right than some of his fellow Tories who have not flagged up this issue in personal statements.

"In a democracy, every one has a right to stand, but I believe David Cameron should be looking in detail at some of his candidates' policies."

Tony Ball, Tory deputy leader, said: "Luke has the 100 per cent endorsement of the local assocation and central office has looked at it and now told us it is happy to endorse his comments. We have raised this issue for the last four years and if it was a problem we would have been told by now."

Tory council leader Malcolm Buckley said promoting the asylum issue was to counter BNP claims asylum seekers were housed locally by the council.

He said: "The fact is most people want an open and honest debate on immigration and the only positive thing to emerge from the BNP is to force the debate among mainstream parties.

"But there are too many loony lefties who will cry racism just at the mention of the word immigration."

Right or wrong, Labour fail to understand that immigrants and asylum seekers being given social housing and benefits are a big concern for a lot of people. The BNP capitalise on this so the Tories are right to point out the facts - something the Labour party seems incapabale of doing (telling the truth that is). As Labour have thrived on spin it's impossible to tell what's true and what's false about this issue. All people can go by now is what they see and what they experience.

When an asylum seeker travels across 12 other safe nations just to reach England are they really an asylum seeker? Or have they targeted England's benefits systems? Someone who is fleeing torture and persecution would be happy to place their feet in the first safe nation.

Nobody would knock any immigrant who comes to this country who wants to better themselves or build a better life. I would expect the same of anyone who moves abroad from GB. The Spanish rightly condemn the British Ex-Pats who cannot be bothered to learn their own language and act like the chavvy scum on Marbella Belles.

Labour's failure to tackle or answer these questions has now led to desperation on their part with talk of Border controls, ID cards, etc. People trafficking has never been worse.

We make it too easy by printing every form in every conceivable language. In France every form is in French. If you can't read French then tough - learn how to.

It's a problem that Labour has allowed to get out of control. In its weakness it's allowing the far-right parties to spread fear and anxiety.

Just look at what happened to Dagenham in the last election.

Good old Labour pandering to the minorities that nobody wants.

We are not racist we are realists and the country is being torn apart by the stupid labour policys, you only have to looks at London and the recent stabbings to see where mass imigration gets you

Well said Vicar - Whichever party actually addresses peoples concerns re immigration, crime, law and order and doesn't pander to the PC brigade will romp home. Before the fluffy bunnies rise up just let me state that people are sick and tired of 'immigrants' getting preferential treatment for housing, medical treatment etc over the indigenous population.

exactly! they say they are fleeing persecution and simply want a safe life yet risk their lives by trying to swim the channel and hanging onto speeding trains and lorries.

It makes my blood boil when people try and criticise Basildon Council for wanting to house its own residents, you want asylum seekers? invite them to stay in ur own bloody house then! or in your street. While Im paying taxes Id like to see people that need it getting it, not handed straight over to mr awumbolodubu mosambidnuwabu

ever noticed how all the politicians that are pro-immigration are the ones that have never had to live with immigrants? all the privatley-schooled chauffer-driven posh boys that have only ever came face to face with a person of ethnic minority for publicity reasons, the only ones saying what the great british public are saying are the working-class people that know what your area being overwelmed by immigrants is like

Basildon Billy, says...
1:44pm Wed 11 Apr 07

Also, see the key phrase "race row" whats race got to do with it? who says all immigrants are of ethnic minority? there are white immigrants too, anything thats not in immigrants favour is always "racist"

LABOUR want immigrants so that they can buy their vote.

Liberals and Labour in some parts of the country are putting leaflets out in Polish to try and get votes.
Wait till the olympics gets behind london and our part of essex will be full immigrants . TIME TO PUT A STOP TO IT NOW

Nicola, Basildon says...
2:57pm Wed 11 Apr 07

I think the conservatives are right not to let asylum seekers onto the Basildon housing council list otherwise people that have lived in Basildon all their lives and have contributed to the economy are the ones missing out, when asylum seekers pass through other countries but will not stop there, they always proceed onto England. I also will probably be voting for BNP this year then labour may realise that this is a very important issue that they are not addressing.

Missy, Southend says...
3:48pm Wed 11 Apr 07

I was totally prepared to be outraged by this story due to the title but I can see why what has been done has been done. If you live in an area and are unfortunate enough to need a council house your needs should go above those of asylum seekers - look after ur own before others. This is not an issue of race, I am mixed race, its a matter of doing the right thing

Basildon Billy, says...
3:54pm Wed 11 Apr 07

The government is so in favour of immigration because every working immigrant is another person they can tax, they would have us all sleeping in bunk beds if it ment they got more money from us. They have almost completely given up on unemployed brits now, the government has stopped funding alot of apprenticeships now because so many immigrants with those skills are comming here, they want the immigrants on side because by 2010 half the UK's population will be immigrants, they dont even take into consideration alot of these immigrants come here yet hate the western world and all we stand for, they call us "pigs" they hate our way of living, they are only here because of what they can get, and instead of telling them where to go the government just uses our money to make our country more appealing to them, this is why the BNP becoms more popular every year, and to be honest, those anti-BNP leaflets make me wanna vote them even more, they show how far they will over-exagerrate BNP policies to paint them all out as racist nazis, when infact, none of the BNP's policies even mention race.

No, we're the only mugs taking on this many people in unmanageable quantities because we have a pathetic, ineffectual and morally corrupt government that is backed up by an idiot minority of mewling left wing liberals.

I personally have experience of job theft, not to mention having my car trashed by some illegal immigrant yobo with no insurance. There are other PERSONAL experiences I could recount aplenty - as they directly affect my own family's livelihood - to my children's detriment.

Sorry folks but we have enough "aliens" in this borough to sink a spaceship.

Enough's enough! Let's slam the gates and bolt them - and concentrate on our own poor and sick.

Paddyman, last time I looked at a map, Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and Africa weren't part of the EC.

Neil, Billericay says...
1:35am Thu 12 Apr 07

Why vote for the cheap copy when you can have the original as Le Pen says in France. Mr Sarkozy the French Tory is doing something on this issue but the British Tories once again are playing games with an important issue for votes but as anyone who has studied past British governments and their handling of this issue of asylum and immigration knows the Tories are only a little bit less soft on it than Labour but they won't solve it and this is because the EU is preventing us from doing precisely that.

www.speakout.co.uk/borders.aspx

Only a MASS BNP vote will get 'mainstream' politicians to wake-up and start to seriously address the public's concerns. The ONLY reason why the likes of Sarkozy in France are doing some hardline actions in this area of goverment is because the French political Establishment is scared rigid by Le Pen. British politicians need a similar wake-up call!

rapidly losing all hope, Essex says...
2:12am Thu 12 Apr 07

I think you'll find the saying 'Charity begins at home' refers to our giving rather than our taking. In other words giving should start with us as individuals before we look to organisations to be responsible.

Sorry and all that guys but the BNP is every bit as bad as people say. Yes, they do call for repatriation of anyone who is not white, however long they've lived in the UK. Our society has had immigrants throughout all time, in fact we can all trace our heritage back to immigrants of one kind or another; that's the nature of this tiny island. However, it has not diluted our culture. If you want to talk about antisocial behaviour, look back to the poll tax riots, or mods and rockers. Plato wrote about the 'youth of today' and that was 2500 years ago.

It is interesting how people seem to think the ills of this country can be simply blamed upon others. That is exactly what Hitler did. Strangely, the kids I see playing up, the vandalism, the theft, rape and murder is going on in all sorts of neighbourhoods, privileged and deprived, Labour, Lib Dem and Tory and the 'native born' are every bit as guilty as anyone else. So perhaps people should try to get these things into perspective and stop their narrow minded, ignorant little rants.

Spike, Basildon says...

All the immigants want to come here because we are a soft touch. We don't have a problem spending thousands on these people, when we can't afford/be bothered to look after our own.

Jim, Westcliff On Sea says...
8:03am Thu 12 Apr 07

I've lived in many areas, Merseyside, Manchester, Middlesex, London, Hampshire and now Essex... and one thing ALWAYS remains the same throughout these areas, some worse then others, and that's the treatment of the racial MAJORITY!

Surley the basis of demoracy is majority rule, so why is the racial majority in this country constantly being overlooked and handouts being given to those outside of our borders ahead of the needy here.

It's NOT being racist to have these opinions, and I'm sick and tired of being made to feel like it is. It's plain common sense and a realisation that we have a government which is scared of a tarnished image.

Racism is a word that's been over well over used, and it's about time people started to shrug it off.

The simple facts that your tiny liberal pea-brain has trouble getting around is that land and housing is a finite resource in this country.

Most young couples, including myself can't get on the property ladder or even get a council flat.

Dave, please leave out the name calling, it isnt helpful and just makes u look stupid. It doesnt add to your point either.

The local Tories have not been reading the Head office hymn sheet.
This from Shadow Minister for Local Government, Eric Pickles MP,no conseverative should ”not agree with any statement made by a BNP candidate in debate, or across the council chamber; nor second or support any motion proposed by the BNP. It is always necessary to be unambiguous in all dealings; there can be no coming together for the good of the community”
Labour(the defunct mob,who always Lecture the electorate), should VOTE on local issues rather than National ones.
This is a noble cause from a party that is in it's dying embers, but bring up the LOCAL issue of council housing and asylum seekers in the same breath(a local concern) and this is the bog standard response you receive from Labour:
Allan Davies, Basildon Labour group deputy leader, described it as propoganda to stir up race hate and segregation.

He said: "Mr Mackenzie does appear to lean further to the right than some of his fellow Tories who have not flagged up this issue in personal statements.

"In a democracy, every one has a right to stand, but I believe David Cameron should be looking in detail at some of his candidates' policies."

So there's our choice voter.
Do really trust these so called mainstream parties to represent our INTERESTS,LOCALLY or NATIONALY?)
I know who my vote is going to and it begins with B**

What political party doesn't act like fascists and terrorists when they're in power?

I mean, Labour and the Tories have set such great examples in the past.

Thanks to Stalinist Labour and limp liberals there is going to be a BLOODBATH in Britain unless you all wake up and vote the British National Party into power as quickly as possible.
This is reality. Don't anyone bother to tell me otherwise.
The writing is on the wall, and let me tell the multiculti cretins on here something - you will be the first to go under when it all kicks off - not by native Britons, but by your beloved "enrichers"!
I am not a fool and I am not a racist. I am a realist and I want to prevent a violent revolution if that's still possible.
Time is running out!

Is this the union that recruits Labour voters in Poland while overseeing the destruction of British jobs and paying it's members subs to the Labour party?
Is this the union that puts out anti-white, anti-British propaganda, paid for by it's members?
Is this the union that supports Bliar's illegal bloodbath in Iraq with it's membership fund?
Is this the Unison you refer to?
Is this the union whose Stalin-worshipping officials rake off huge salaries, perks and pensions from it's membership funds while assisting the Labour party to destroy the pensions of millions?
Is this the union that tells people that the only party that truly speaks in the interests of native Britons are fascists and criminals?
Is this the union you refer to?

I am shaken with what i am reading in the comments in this post, but at the same time determine to contribute in what i believe is very heated debate amongs the electorate before May the 3rd elections.
As somebody with an asylum background living in Essex, i now know i am not as safe as i thought and that, was it not for the fear of the law of the land, i might as well been belted over by someone who believe that all the problems of this county are made by asylum seekers. It's ironic that David Cameroon promised to steer the Conservative party towards the centre, but i see through my door a conservative candidate ( Steve Foster) priding himself for the role the conservative is playing either to uproot travellers or to deny asylum seekers accommodation, i am wondering where actually the conservative party is going; more to the extrem right maybe. having said that, it's important for everyone blaming asylum seekers for all of their problems to reflect on John Dunne wise words very resounding in todays situation more than never. " never send to know for whom the bells toys, it toys for....".
It's not the matter of been soft lefties liberals or toughs talking BNP, there's in all of us something that unite us all; humanity.
Let's think more about it.

Alain, nobody here has a problem with genuine asylum seekers. Any civilised nation should help those fleeing persecution and torture.

What concerns people is how many safe nations have people "fled" across just to reach the UK and the number of illegal immigrants and bogus asylum seekers.

Everyone of those people at Sangatte is a bogus asylum seeker. If they weren't, they'd be pleading asylum in France.

They aren't though and I wonder why that is?

Why is everyone so desperate to reach the UK?

Why did you choose the UK? I don't mean that in a hostile fashion but I'm asking out of curiosity.

What drew you to the UK?

Vicar,
this will not be the same without you. One of the main reasons I log in here every day is to read your comments!!!
As for anyone else if you can not put up a decent arguement without resorting to name calling and threats of violence then p**s off and find somewhere else to vent your hostility.

CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME Let's remember that - and let's ponder upon what would become of our own citizens if, god forbid, we should ever need asylum. You can bet your bottom dollar every door in Europe would slam firmly shut. Dear, oh dear, what is that I hear? The pitter patter of an onslaught of squawking wittering lefties! Tally ho!
Kim, you're right for once - if we did need asylum, I have no doubt all the doors would slam in our faces. Because people like you show how hostile we can be to people who need our help. So why should THEY help US?

You claim we're the only ones taking in this many people, yet you conveniently ignore the facts again. Per capita, the UK receive far fewer asylum applications than most other western European countries. The UK rank tenth after Austria, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium, Ireland, Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands and Luxembourg. The number of asylum seekers the UK accept is only 0.5% of its population. Hardly swamped, are we.

You claim "job theft". Please explain. Did someone really "steal" your job or were they just better qualified and more prepared to work hard for a living? Some facts rather than slogans would be handy.

Your car was trashed, you claim, by an illegal immigrant. Can you prove this? Was the culprit caught? Or is this just your opinion. I have to admit that I don't know what a "yobo" is, unless you mean the central defender who plays for Everton.

Facts, Kim Gandhi, Facts.

Have you tried looking for work lately and seen the rates of pay. You could not live on them. They are going to people who will take the lowest wages. They are bringing in doctors from abroad and then telling newly qualified doctors that they should take voluntary work abroad. How would you feel if you studied for years to become a doctor and then saw you job go to someone from abroad and you were told to take voluntary work abroad.

Junior doctors could be officially advised to work for the charity Voluntary Service Overseas amid warnings that 10,000 could be left unemployed this summer.
The VSO option is among several emergency plans being drawn up to keep them busy when there are no jobs for them to go to.
The NHS has been criticised for employing thousands of doctors from developing countries. They come for the higher pay in Britain, but critics say they would be far more useful helping to develop basic health services in their home countries.
It now seems ironic that having taken doctors from Third World countries, the NHS wants to send medics it has trained itself at huge cost to these very places.
It costs around £250,000 for six years' basic training of new doctors, who then need to go into training posts to become specialists.
The extent of the crisis caused by botched reforms of medical training is laid bare in leaked documents from NHS Employers, the organisation responsible for implementing the changes.
It follows mounting problems with the online selection process which led Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt to apologise "unreservedly" to juniors on Monday for the "great distress" they have gone through.
