FOUR swans were shot dead and two more injured in a horrifying attack at a lake.

The family of two adult swans and eight cygnets were attacked and shot in the chest and head with an air rifle.

Four of the eight young swans died and two adults swans were seriously injured, with bullets lodged in their heads. Two of the surviving cygnets are with their parents, while the other two have been rescued.

The dead birds were found floating at a lake in Kennington Park, Aveley, by resident Mark Ryder.

The police and RSPCA have been informed and the police are investigating.

Founder of the South Essex Wildlife Hospital, Sue Schwar, said: “It’s absolutely heartbreaking and appalling what’s happened.

“People have such disregard for wildlife.

It’s abhorrent. It’s well known from studies that people who torture animals can go on to be serial killers. People need to be vigilant.

“If you see people with air rifles, you need to contact the police straight away. It’s illegal to go round shooting wild birds.”

A reward of £1,000 has been offered by Mr Ryder for information leading to the prosecution of those responsible for the shooting.

A spokesman for the RSPCA said: “Unfortunately, we do see cases like this far, far too often.

“We very concerned to hear about this incident. Anyone with information should come forward and call us.”
