A TEENAGE mum has launched a fundraising campaign after doctors saved her miracle baby’s life.

Paige Balding, 16, was given the devastating news at her 20 week scan that her unborn child had a rare heart defect, which meant she had just a 50 per cent chance of survival.

Paige, of Broadhope Avenue, Stanford-le-Hope, was even given the option of terminating her pregnancy.

Lacey-Mae was born 18 weeks later, weighing 5lb 7oz.

She was rushed to intensive care at Great Ormond Street Hospital, without time for a cuddle with her terrified mum, and at just four days old was taken into the operating theatre for open-heart surgery.

A week later Lacey-Mae was discharged, but began experiencing breathing difficulties.

She was rushed back to the London hospital and underwent another operation, with Paige warned to expect the worse.

At four months old, Paige is now recovering well.

Paige said: “We got her home and she just started going blue. It was horrible. It was very hard not knowing if she would survive.

“Great Ormond Street Hospital have given Lacey-Mae a better life. I want to make everyone aware of their amazing work.

Although she is now on the mend, Lacey-Mae may need more surgery in the future.

Paige, a childcare student, added: “I couldn’t imagine not having my baby, so I kept her.

I’ve always loved children.”
