BALMY Mediterranean weather is expected for a record-breaking charity event, which is backed by the Echo.

Warm, pleasant weather is forecast to replace thunderstorms in time for the Southend Colourthon tomorrowand temperatures of 20C are expected to last into the night for the moonlit walk.

Almost 1,100 people have now signed up for the three sunlight, twilight and moonlight Colourthon walks, supported by the Echo, which will raise money for almost 200 charities.

Ten per cent more participants than last year will walk or run up to 13.3 miles from Chalkwell Park in aid of 189 different charities.

Southend Round Table, which organises the annual fundraiser, is looking for more stewards to help out as the turnout is so large.

Organiser Mat Osborne said: “With a 13-mile course around Southend, we are looking for volunteers. Our numbers have crossed the 1,000 threshold and we are well on our way to 1,100.”

He added: “We’re really pleased it looks like the sun will shine on another Southend Colourthon.

“We have enjoyed a good run of weather over the nine years we have held the event. It’s a safe event and we have got large stocks of water for the walkers.

“The fact it won’t be raining will make it even more colourful.”

Rotarians are planning to hand out on-the-spot awards of up to £200 to charities for achievements such as having the most walkers.

Rain is expected to clear up in time for the sunlight walk around the park at 2pm and it will stay warm for the 10k twilight and 13.3mile moonlight walks, both of which set off from the park at 8pm.

Over the past nine years, the walks have raised about £1.1million for 722 different causes. To enter or volunteer as a steward visit colourthon.org
