SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown hopes to be able to complete a move for Noel Hunt within the next 24 hours.

The Irish striker watched the Shrimpers beat Charlton Athletic 2-1 in a pre-season friendly at Roots Hall last night.

And Brown was thrilled to see the 32-year-old in attendance.

“All of a sudden Noel is showing he’s willing to come to Southend and the commitment he showed in coming down to watch means a lot to me,” said the Blues boss.

“I think we’re still 24 hours from that one getting over the line but you can never be completely confident until it’s done.”

Brown has been in talks with the experienced forward for several weeks following his release from Ipswich Town at the end of last season.

And the Shrimpers chief revealed all topics have now be discussed.

“We’ve talked about everything we’ve needed to discuss in terms of finances, the length of contract and what he can bring to the party,” said Brown.

“But it’s obviously a big decision for Noel because he would be coming down a level as he’s played most of his career in the Premiership and Championship.

“He also has this opportunity in America with Chicago Fire in the background which hasn’t gone anyway and he does want to give that the best chance he can.

“But once he commits to this football club he said he wants to commit 100 per cent.”

Despite that, Brown is still doing all he can to bring Hunt to Roots Hall.

“I’m making all the right noises and so he is,” said the 56-year-old.

“Hopefully in the next 24 hours the chairman will as well along with Noel’s agent and we can get it done.”
