A NURSE has been struck off for making a colleague run personal errands for her, including taking her to Lakeside and mowing her lawn.

Abiola Olukemi Apara used a clinical support worker at Basildon Hospital to carry out personal tasks for her and refused to talk to other colleagues instead communicating by notes.

The Nursing and Midwifery Panel suspended her in January 2014 and this week decided to strike her off the nursing register following the incidents that took place when she worked on the Lionel Cousins Ward between April 2002 and January 2007.

The former nurse demanded a colleague drive her to Ikea at Lakeside, take her car for its MoT, install a washing machine, install lights, fix a leaking tap, put sealant around her bath and fix a lock in her conservatory between September 2004 and January 2007.

Mrs Apara did not attend the hearing at the Nursing and Midwifery Council in London and has not engaged with the council since January 2014.

She also failed to tell her employer in Nigeria and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria about the proceedings in London.

The hearing found she has “demonstrated no insight or remorse into her actions” and “there is a considerable risk of Mrs Apara repeating her misconduct if she were allowed to return to unrestricted practice”.

Mrs Apara also shouted at a colleague and ignored another for five weeks communicating only through notes. Between 2005 and 2006, she yelled, “your office now”, at another ward sister, Miss E, and ignored her for 17 weeks.

A report from the Nursing and Midwifery Council said: “In light of the apparent deep-seated attitudinal and serious behavioural issues, the panel is of the view that Mrs Apara’s ongoing registration poses a risk not only to the public, but also the public confidence in the profession and the NMC as the regulator.

“The panel determined Mrs Apara is liable to repeat her misconduct and it is necessary to take action to prevent her from practising in the future and concluded the only sanction that would adequately protect the public and serve the public interest was a striking-off order.”

Mrs Apara has 28 days to appeal the order.

A spokesman for Basildon Hospital said: “Abiola Apara was dismissed from this trust on May 10, 2007. The trust took decisive action by dismissing Abiola Apara and referring her to the NMC as soon as we discovered her inappropriate behaviour towards staff – we do not tolerate any form of bullying or harassment of colleagues.”
