A COMMUNITY group chairman fears a former councillor’s life could be in danger if he is sent back to Kenya.

Former Basildon councillor Daniel Munyambu faces extradition in relation to fraud charges.

The Echo revealed last week Mr Munyambu, who is in Wandsworth prison, had contacted former political colleagues in a bid to raise £10,000 for bail.

He has written to Neil Hart, chairman of Vange Community Group, asking for help.

The pair met when Mr Hart successful bid to build a community centre on land Kent View Road Recreation Ground.

While he is unable to help financially, he is keen to raise awareness of Mr Munyambu’s plight.

Mr Hart said: “I haven’t got any personal reason to get involved, I don’t class him as a friend, but I see him as a human being who is in trouble. He was our local councillor and was active in the community.

“I feel he is being unfairly treated.

This is all over a financial dispute which is a civil matter. If he was extradited his life would be in danger.”

Kenyan prosecutors allege Mr Munyambu, who ran a car export business from his home in Clickett End, Basildon, forged invoices for a Land Cruiser in order to falsely obtain £15,800 in November 2008.

He was arrested when he visited Kenya four years later, but jumped bail and returned to Basildon.

Mr Munyambu has been vocal in the past about his wishes to oust current president Uhuru Kenyatta and formhis own political party to take over the presidency of Kenya.

He has been in custody since June and is expected to face a bail hearing this month, before a full extradition hearing is held later this year.
