THE Echo has delved into the archives to find pictures of some of its past carnival queens.

For many, memories of the carnival spectacle stretch back years –which is why we thought we’d share these pictures from our library.

The role of Southend carnival queen has always been coveted and the queen, along with her princesses, are the figurehead of the carnival week.

From overseeing fancy dress competitions, to riding at the head of the main procession, the duties of the carnival court reflect community life in Southend.

The court also represents Southend at civic events and other carnivals around the country.

These images of Southend’s Carnival queens in their gowns and tiaras date stretch back as far as 1938.

Do you recognise any of the carnival queens or princesses? If so, contact the Echo on 01268 469406 or email your memories to echonews@nqe.com.

  • Since this article went to print, several former Southend Carnival Queens and friends have contacted the Echo to fill in the missing names of people. Details are below. Anyone that can add more details about the Carnival Courts pictured here, or want to share their memories, comment below or email echo.letters@nqe.com or write to Echo Newspapers, Chester Hall Lane, Basildon, SS14 3BL including your full name, road name and town.

Echo: Mystery court – The Echo had no information about the queen and court pictured here, but since we printed the article several people have come forward to name some of the Carnival Court.

Mary Baker (nee Nathanielsz) told the Echo: "I am in this picture which was from the 1954 Carnival. Pat Fox was the Carnival Queen and the gentleman on the left is Mr Flatley. Her deputy was Elizabeth but I am not sure of her last name and the other members of the court were Barbara Pearmain, Nina and Jill."

Echo: Canine chum – 1968’s queen Shirley Capps and furry friend

Echo: Ermine beauties – Carole was queen 1956 and Jill wore the crown two years later, but what were their surnames?
