A PURPOSE built £90,000 paediatric assessment unit has been opened by former X Factor and Britain’s GoTalent stars, Lauren and Lewis Platt.

Basildon Hospital’s nine week-project saw a former discharge lounge get converted into the unit, and is hoped to improve the hospital’s children’s services.

Dr Rim El-Rifai, Clinical Director of Children’s and Women’s services at Basildon Hospital, said: “This is a 24/7 unit designed for children who are likely to be here for a short stay. This can include children who may have just ingested something, or those with long-term conditions and just require 24 hours of care.”

The design of the unit was aided by six families, whose children have long-term health conditions and regularly use the hospital.

Charlotte Huzzey, 34, of Ghyllgrove Close, Basildon, whose daughter Ruby, 8, is blind, deaf and suffers from cerebral palsy, has welcomed the new assessment unit.

She said: “We’re very grateful to have had a chance to give suggestions, and have just provided practical help for families who will use it.

“The unit will save us time and make our visits easier.”

A screening room to accompany the new unit is hoped to be completed within the next two weeks.
