ESSEX League Division Three champions Old Southendian & Southchurch are determined to build on their promotion next year after making club history.

Aaron Lucas’ team are believed to have been the first of the Southchurch Park club’s top teams to have won the league.

But as they prepare to bring the curtain down on their fine campaign, Lucas is determined that this summer’s success will not be a flash in the pan.

“In terms of the promotion and winning the league we think it's the first time that the first team have won a division of the Shepherd Neame Essex League,” said Lucas.

“We can be proud of our efforts throughout this year and last year, when we narrowly missed out on promotion.

“Maybe we weren’t quite ready for it last year, but we have had a younger set of players over the last two years and they are developing into quality players.

“That bodes well for next year where the standards will improve somewhat.

“We have set the foundations over the last two years which will give us every chance of success in Division Two.

“We have won a lot of games this season and are ready for it next season.”

Lucas plans to give players lower down the order a chance to show what they can do as the Old Boys host sixth-placed Woodford Green tomorrow.

It could also be the first team's final game at Southchurch Park following the club's decision this week to join Old Southendian football club and Southendian Manor junior football club in moving to Garon Park next year.

Westcliff-on-Sea are currently fourth but are level with third-placed Walthamstow and will be hoping to leap-frog them.

Chris Gladwin’s young side sign off with a trip to bottom-of-the-table Old Brentwoods.

Basildon & Pitsea are fifth and finish their Jeckyl and Hyde season at ninth-placed West Essex.

Michael Gray’s team will look for a winning finish after a frustrating season which has seen them defeat promoted sides Old Southendian and Oakfield Parkonians but lose against sides below them in the table.

Gareth Steed’s seventh-placed Benfleet will also want to go out with a bang at home to Walthamstow.
