MAJOR talents and unsung heroes will be recognised at next month’s Active Basildon Sports Awards.

The 2015 awards ceremony will be held at the Towngate Theatre on October 20.

The public is being urged to nominate deserving candidates for each of the award categories.

The winners of each category at next month’s ceremony will then go forward to be considered for a countywide award.

Kevin Blake, Basildon councillor responsible for leisure, said: “It is the dedicated volunteers who make it possible for our talented youngsters to reach their goals.

“The Active Basildon Sports Awards celebrate talent, commitment and determination in all forms - from rising and accomplished sports people to those nurturing elite sporting talent or inspiring their local community to be more active.”

At the 2014 ceremony, sports personality of the year was gymnast Max Whitlock, who trained in Basildon and won two bronze medals at the 2012 Olympics.

The awards will recognise the year’s best sports personality, coach, disabled sports personality, physical activity project and volunteer.

There will also be an award for services to disability sport and a personal achievement award.

The deadline for nominations is Monday, September 14.
