50,000 uninsured cars in Essex

A STAGGERING 50,000 uninsured vehicles are driving on the roads of Essex, police estimate.

Essex drivers account for six per cent of the two million uninsured cars the Government thinks are using Britain's roads.

But there is some good news. In Essex, the police are finding rogue cars at the rate of about 500 a month - with drivers facing prosecution and in some cases the prospect of having their cars crushed.

New laws are now on the way to allow the force to seize and crush more vehicles, as a way of detering illegal drivers.

Department for Transport spokesman Ben Wills said: "Within a year we hope to have laws which allow any uninsured vehicle to be seized - even if it is on somebody's driveway."

"Unless the owner has filled out the statutory off-road notification form, they will first get a letter reminding them the vehicle is uninsured.

"If they don't act, the vehicle could be taken and crushed."

Computerised links between the DVLA and insurers, mean police can now instantly establish who owns any vehicle and if it is insured. The figures for Essex were revealed by a member of the force's mobile support unit, Adam Pipe, who was speaking at a meeting in Basildon.

He said: "There is also an order, which allows the police to seize a vehicle which is judged to have caused alarm, harrassment or distress."

However, he stressed, the owners of such vehicles would first get a warning letter.

Why write to warn them? Seize the vehicles and be done with it!!!
I PAY MY INSURANCE ETC SO WHY SHOULDN'T EVERYONE ELSE?

THIS MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!!

A.P.R, Benfleet says...

Makes me angry too. Why are they allowed to get away with it ?

My theory is that the police are slow to act, as uninsured drivers by their very nature, probably don't have much money to pay fines.

Much more cost efficient to set up some mobile speed cameras and catch drivers who pay up without argument.

If the police know how many uninsured drivers are on the roads of Essex then why dont they catch a few of them then name and shame them in the echo.

I thought the whole point of the hugely expensive AVR system.
What is the point in spending all of that money on it and extra manpower etc if this is still happening?
DVLA database knows when you are not taxed and I thought it picked up on the insurance details too... Am I wrong on this?

Never fear, Citizen Gridley is watching...

The Police don't know, the article states its an estimate. If they want to get a few sorted they should pop down the local pikey camp and check those vehicles for false plates, lack of insurance etc etc

I'd say walk around most of the estates in Basildon and you'll account for most of those 50,000.

To be fair, some people can honestly forget about renewing their tax disc.

However, after the warning letter passes its final date, I agree:

Drag the vehicle away and chomp it to bits.

Vicar, stop being racist and anti-English.

Nelson - I can't believe it either. That kind of language/attitude is sadly still lingering in some small pockets of Essex.

If the Echo does not start moderating these responses this will rapidly turn into a forum for bigots.

As to the issue: I think some leeway should be given for those who genuinely overlooked the fact that their tax has expired. However, anything beyond a month after expiry and I think the excuses won't wash. these cars should be seized.

Kim Gandy, wickford says...

Some of the Crays Hill vehicles don't even have a tax disc HOLDER on the windscreen of the Transit let alone a tax disc.

Yes, there are estates in Basildon where I've seen taxdiscless cars too.

And yes, sometimes I've forgotten to pay mine but usually only a few days after the last one finished, so really nothing has been lost as you pay the full six or 12 months.

Let's face it, the police are too lily livered to pay Dale Farm or some Basildon estates a visit.

There were about TEN of them the other day trying to catch unsuspecting motorists in the Runwell Road.

Why deploy a large number of officers on one road? Why not spread them around a wide area?

And why not target Oak Road in Crays Hill for a whole week.

That should keep the crusher busy.

I think we should just round up anyone that doesn't fit in, potential offenders, etc and keep them somewhere safe. A sort of camp, if you like, where they can have time to concentrate on where they've gone astray.

Can anyone think of a snappy name we can give these facilities?

What? What planet are you living on Doug?

What on earth have I said in those comments above that is racist and anti-English?

Or is this just another Doug Impersonator?

The Echo need to provide proper monitored forums as this is becoming a joke.

Hasn't your lot had ten years to sort this out?

Obviously people are pointing the finger at Dale Farm, but an easier way to pick up many of the uninsured cars would be to stop and check all the left hand drive cars with P or Lit on their number plates

How about Dale Farm or Crays Hill next door to Lisa :)

Catching 500 per month, eh? Well that's good then, only another 8 years and 4 months and we should have the lot of them then (if you forget the law of diminishing returns, and assume there are no new offenders in this period).

I think the ANPR "stings" are a worthwhile effort, where they have camera vans and police cars set up on main roads to detect and catch offenders. However, the DVLA data is notorious for it's lack of accuracy, and mistakes happen on a regular basis.

Taking someone's car from their driveway is wrong, if it's not on the public road it is nobody's business if it is taxed or insured or not. If someone was away from home for an extended period, on vacation, business, or perhaps in hospital, they could return to find their car taken.

Surely this is incompatible with Human Rights legislation that protects enjoyment of one's own property (not that I'm a fan of the Human Rights legislation).

Doug, Wakering says...

ST1, I am not disagreeing with you but I believe the rules changed recently about cars being declared off the road.

Nowadays you have to actively complete and submit a SORN declaration, not just let the road tax lapse. If you let it lapse without a SORN then you can be penalised. Harsh, but it's the law unfortunately.

We don't actually know if it's from the horse's mouth. Nelson could be a plant from the Traveller Representative of the Commission for Racial Equality?

Surely Doug requires at least two pieces of identification, a meeting with Nelson and three members of his family, a copy of his birth certificate and a goodnight kiss before accepting his comments as truth/fact?

After all, isn't that what he says to everyone else? ;)

And as usual the law breaking few are causing inconvenience to the law abiding majority by causing this ridiculous legislation to be brought in.

The really annoying thing is that most uninsured drivers probably haven't legally registered their vehicles anyway, so this system will not catch them. Hence the low rate of 500 a month - if DVLA really knew where all the non-insured vehicles were, the clear up rate would be much bigger.

What this system does in reality is lets the law abiding motorists know that they are being watched in case they slip up.

Policing by database is only as good as the data stored. But then it's cheaper and easier than providing proper policing.
