THE £100,000 redevelopment of an Old Leigh landmark is back on track as the town council looks set to appoint a contractor.

Following a lack of interest, Leigh Town Council was forced to reopen the tendering process for the Strand Wharf redevelopment last month, but it has now found a willing builder.

The contractor, who cannot yet be named, is set to be confirmed at an extraordinary meeting of the council at Leigh’s Community Centre this evening.

Richard Herbert, chairman of the town council, welcomed the news.

He said: “We are all looking forward to it.

“When it first went out to tender, I have no idea why, but we only got one quote and we were not happy to accept a single quote.

“Thankfully, this time, after we phoned round all the people we thought would be capable and interested, we had four applications.

“Everything has also been done to avoid disturbing the old town during the holiday season.”

The development would see Strand Wharf repaved in stone, showing the outlines of former fishing cottages, with seating for “open air classrooms” and soft LED light to mimic moonlight.

The council’s budget for the project is set at a little more than £115,000, with the contractor thought to have quoted nearly £107,000 for the whole job.
