After the heydey of having hits such as Wherever I Lay My Hat and Everytime You Go Away, Paul Young decided to get together a band for fun and to “get back to basics”.

It was so much fun that 23 years later they are still going strong.

Paul Young’s Los Pacaminos originally formed as a Tex-Mex band, but have now evolved their own style, taking influences from the likes of Ry Cooder, Flaco Jimenez, Roy Orbison, the Texas Tornados, Calexico, Ennio Morricone, Texas blues, a little bit of country, Cajun, Conjunto and a hefty slice of Americana.

They’ll be coming to the Touchline Live Music club on Friday October 16.

The band is made up of members with an impressive pedigree – Paul Young himself, Jamie Moses (Pretenders, Brian May and Queen, Tom Jones and a host of others), Drew Barfield (the Keys, the Big Heat, JB All Stars), Matt Irving (Dream Police, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band, Lords of the New Church, Paul Young, Squeeze etc.), Melvyn Duffy (Jimmy Nail, Deanna Carter, Robbie Williams, the Waterboys, First Aid Kit), Steve Greetham (Paul Young, Julia Fordham) and Mark Pinder (Vampire Bats from Lewisham, Paul Young, Alison Moyet).

Paul says: “I was between record labels and writing material for a new album but I wanted to play live again.

I’ve always loved the Tex-Mex sound and knew a few musicians who had a similar passion for this type of music. So I asked them to join me in forming a band.”

The group became known for performing in pubs and nightclubs, singing songs such as Wooly Bully, La Bamba and Speedy Gonzales.

In 2002, they recorded a debut self-titled album.

All the shows they play this year are in support of their recently-released second studio album, A Fistful of Statins, which has so far been receiving rave reviews.

The night kicks off at 8pm at the Touchline Live Music club in the Hockley Community Centre, Westminster Drive, Hockley.

Tickets are £15 from 07775 761406 or by emailing touchlinelive@virginmedia.com
