Traveller sites in every district

NEW traveller camps may have to be created by every council in Essex to solve the build-up in Basildon.

Two options make up a review, launched by the East of England Regional Assembly, which has now gone out to public consultation until July 31.

Option one, would see Basildon develop 157 more caravan pitches to complement the 109 legal plots it already has, while neighbours Southend and Castle Point create no sites.

The other would lead to illegally-camped travellers moved out of Basildon to smaller camps across Essex, with a minimum of 15 pitches in every local council. Basildon Council leader Malcolm Buckley said: "We will push for the second option and welcome its inclusion.

"We have argued an even distribution of sites, with all councils taking their share, is the only way to reach a long-term solution."

However, David Garston, executive councillor for sustainable Southend, said his council would push for option one.

He said: "No need for sites was identified in Southend and this issue is led by market forces.

"Even if need was found, Southend does not have the open spaces needed for sites."

Councillor John Reynolds, chairman of the assembly's planning panel, said: "Increasing the availability of legal pitches will provide suitable places for gypsies and travellers to live and help tackle the problem of unauthorised sites.

Information is available at www.eera.gov.uk Two consultation days will take place at Tilbury Riverside Arts Activity Centre on Wednesday, May 30 from 2pm and Essex Records Office, Chelmsford, on Tuesday, June 5, from 7pm. Call 01284 729407.

So Basildon gets to take everyone in while Southend doesn't?

And that decision is being supported by David Garston, executive councillor for sustainable Southend? I bet it is!

So by living and squatting illegally the travellers have essentially forced councils to accomodate them? That doesn't seem right.

What a disgraceful mess this has all become.

Kim, over to you :)

There's 200-odd acres of fields just outside Wakering, not being used (recently sold for development actually, but not to travellers hence the lack of fuss).

Why can't some of them live there for example?

Every council is obliged to provide places for travellers to stop - by law.

If we insist on the travellers adhering to the law, as of course we should, then we should also insist on councils upholding their legal obligations too.

If any one council does not do this then there will logically be a surfeit of travellers elsewhere, and we know what sort of reaction that provokes! :0

So once again southend council whinge that they dont have any space to house traveller sites in their area, is this the same southend council that 15/20 years ago wanted to let the goverment of the day build an airport on foulness with a highspeed rail link to barking. they also said that they had no space to build a waste site too. beware southend people do have long memories and are not stupid.

I totally agree with you Doug, again. If there are councils that do not adhere to the law as they expect the travellers and everyone else to do then the travellers should be taking them to court and seeing how they like that. Southend as a whole has many places they can allow them to live. Look at all the land that is sold of to private developers to build the eyesores they call upmarket apartments on. Oh and while I am at it, what about the guy who brought the greenebelt land recently? He says that he may apply for planning permission, does this not contravene the law?

What a complete joke. The East of England regional authority should be shot.

Option 2 Basildon forced to make 95 extre 'legal' traveller sites.

Kim Gandy, Wickford says...
9:42am Fri 11 May 07

The East of England Regional Assembly is yet ANOTHER UNELECTED quango paid for out of our taxes.

Have you seen what their executives get paid?

My suggestion is this - find out where all these EERA fatcats live and dump traveller sites on THEIR doorsteps.

Oh but silly me, I forgot, the Noble Do-Gooder of Wakering is offering land around Wakering.

Has he consulted his neighbours on this or is this, as usual, a unilateral decision?

And our lovely acquiescent Lisa agreeing with him wholeheartedly AGAIN. (Does she ever DISagree?)

Well I suppose these minorities HAVE to stick together don't they?

As for the person on holiday from America, these people have not been GIVEN the land, if you refer to Crays Hill. They actually OWN it. However, they have built on it ILLEGALLY as it is classified as GREEN BELT.

Nobody else is allowed to do this of course, ESCPECIALLY not the registered GENUINE homeless of Basildon, nor anybody else.

These people have homes elsewhere as the Echo's exhaustive investigations have found.

Far from being poor, they are cash-rich, indulging as they do, in all sorts of "activities", most notably to do with illegal sofas and no doubt, other "business interests" including turning up on your doorstep and saying "You DO want your drive/roof/patio fixed, DON'T YOU???.

They drive expensive cars, they all have mobile phones, some wear expensive designer jewellery and some of the single mothers ON BENEFIT, on their own admission to me, attend the tanning parlour and hairdresser's twice a week.

I can't even afford that and I actually WORK for a living.

You see, this country, under B'liar's government, is an open door for all sorts of dubious people. They get handouts from the state at the expense of the English taxpayer and their criminal activities are overlooked.

You need to go into the whole history of life under the B'liar government to fully understand.

I live here and I'm damned if I understand it all.

Rant over!

"Every council is obliged to provide places for travellers to stop - by law."

Just for info - the Tory Government got rid of the duty on councils to provide sites for travellers in 1994.

This decision is largely blamed for causing the problems today with unauthorised sites because of lack of legal provision.

Billericay MP John Baron tried to bring in his own bill to force councils to provide sites again in 2003, along with tougher powers against illegal sites, but it did not get through Parliament. The consultation mentioned in this story is about brining the obligation back, but I do not think it will be a law.

The Noble Do-Gooder, Wakering says...
10:13am Fri 11 May 07

Jon, I thought that obligation had been restored since the Tories nixed it? In about 2004, Human Rights Act? Apologies if I got the facts wrong, and thanks for correcting me.

Now I feel like writing half a page of utter nonsense using RANDOM CAPITALS and sub-school-playground insults while actually stating ABSOLUTELY NOTHING of any positive use to the world. I am then going to pepper my response with POINTLESS NAUSEOUS AND CHILDISH STEREOTYPES thus proving me to be a sad WASTE of OXYGEN. Nyah. :)

Now the Echo, as I pointed out before, has not actually found any evidence at all that the Dale Farm travellers (yes, her obsession continues, and so do her lies) own homes abroad. Reading the story properly - or "doing your homework" if you prefer - would show that at no point does the story say they definitely own homes abroad. So Gandy is, as ever, peddling half-truths and innuendo to back up her repetitive intolerant nauseating posts. You're a severely bitter and twisted person (and I use the word "person" advisedly, and while wearing protective clothing). You need help, Kim. Seriously.

Sums it up rather well, I think.

A Ratepayer, says...
11:13am Fri 11 May 07

This government should clamp down on these low life scum just as the Irish govt has (hence the reason many have turned up in the uk). There should be no obligation on any council to provide sites for these people. If I had voulntarily made myself homeless or rented my house out and gone to another country or region and tried to get assisitance it would not be forthcoming. So why should they.
There are a few genuine Romany people, alot less than people imagine. The rest are just spongers who play the system and leave mess, crime and destruction behind them.

Gail, Basildon says...
11:21am Fri 11 May 07

Come on now people why not all be good citizens and have a caravan each in our gardens

Rita, says...
11:26am Fri 11 May 07

Sorry, but when did being a "do-gooder" become a bad thing? There does seem to be a sufficient amount of land in the Southend and surrounding areas that are conveniently "discovered" when the big-boy corporate builders and their mates at the council need it...
I wish people would look at stories/reports in their entirety - when the Dale Farm travellers said they would move to a legal site in Pitsea, a 5000 name petition was submitted by the locals and the move never happened. Someone "offers" land around Wakering and is slated for it! I have to say to CityBoy (if that really is you posting) that I am more than surprised at your "pikeys" and "trash" comments. I hope too that KG is as zealous when "exposing" ALL single mothers on BENEFIT that get under a sun-bed occasionally or get their hair done (whilst wearing "desgner" jewellery??!!)...

It's confusing when people complain about the "real" travellers moving on and leaving rubbish etc strewn behind (as Alpha states above)that the taxpayer has to pay to clear up and then state that they don't want them on legal/illegal sites, in one place, where they could be held responsible for their own "mess" etc...

The Noble Do-Gooder, Wakering says...
11:27am Fri 11 May 07

Well I offered, Gail... the land near my village even has planning permission.

Not good enough for some people though - they want to argue we don't have it in our back yard so our comments aren't valid, but they also don't want us to actually see real travellers because then we'd see through their lies. Life can be so confusing when you're that bitter, I assume.

Fortunately not everyone on here has made such a failure of their life that they feel they have to come on and act like a bipolar teenager on PCP.

For christ sake what is the problem here? If like doug says the goverment/council whoever have a legal obligation to give land for travellers to live on then that is what needs to be done, not just by law, but also to save face... For the chap on holiday, don't take all that KG said as gospel, I would think that she is happy to be able to rant to someone like you who isn't in the loop as such, you don't know any better and will take on what she says. A lot of it is not correct. Not all single parents are on benefit, not all of them live on Dale farm and not everyone who lives on Dale farm is rich, owns expensive cars. Kg is right in saying that they own the land, they purchased it fair and square, the point is you can not build on greenbelt land, no one can build on greenbelt land, so why is the chap who brought land last week saying that he will obtain permission to build on his? Because he is not a traveller I would say.

Steve, they don't give land to anyone else, that is a typical Doug non-answer. These "travellers" do not need these official sites now because they do not travel around and they can afford to buy or rent a house, if they need to go further afield for work they can use a car like everyone else has to. I have to travel around in my job but I use a car and stay in hotels if I have to be away from home for a while, while my family stays at home, just as they do in America. The way this situation has been allowed to get out of hand is just another example of Blair's incompetence.

Yes and that comment came from an official with a record for insulting members of the public and is currently the subject of an ongoing Standards Board investigation. So shut up you fool. Did anybody ever tell you not to discuss ongoing legal actions? You really do open mouth before engaging brain don't you?
You really do need to stop talking to yourself Kim, don't you dare call Doug a fool or tell him to shut up. How rude can you person be? He is not a fool in the slightest, rather an intelligent man who backs up his posts with FACTS whenever needed, something I have yet to see you do. As for engaging his brain, when was the last time you did that before wittering on and leaving nasty posts?

I think you will find Kim that the above quote is on a link that anyone can google;and what I find so hilarious, not to mention hypocritical; is that this person has corresponded to you in EXACTLY the way you do to the majority of people that do not share your views. The fact that you have then reported him is unbelievable.Did no-one ever tell you not to give it if you cannot take it?
For someone such as you,who sets themselves up to tell all and sundry how to behave, you are an extremely rude woman;even my three year old grandson knows you do not tell people to shut up;you ask them to please be quiet.;)

Admirable sentiments, William, but I'm pretty sure the law doesn't extend to burglars and squatters. Sorry. :)
It does I am afraid, only on the basis that they did not break and enter. They can then live there while the council goes through the legal proceedure to evict, also someone has to be in the house 24/7 to stop anyone entering and changing locks etc and while there they have to pay the bills.
Daft isnt it?

That comment clearly came from an official who knows his onions, no more no less.

If it's an ongoing legal action then why has it been online for so long, Kim? You aren't LYING again are you? Not long ago you claimed to have cost this man his job - and very proud you were, too. Keep your story straight.

By the way, I don't type with my mouth open. :)

I would put money on there being occassions when you type with your mouth open.

a, when some people have the audacity to type without thinking first
b, when there are certain websites that have pictures of salsa dancers on them. ;)
