A 70-year-old man who is afraid of heights will strap himself to the top of a bi-plane to raise money for a hospice.

Brian Terry, 70, and his wife Andrea will complete a wing walk for Havens Hospices which cares for childrens and adults with life-limiting illnesses.

Mr Terry, who has been a volunteer trustee for the charity since 2011, said: “I’m actually scared of heights so this is going to be a real challenge for me.

“I have actually flown a tiger moth plane which we will be on but when you are strapped inside it’s a bit different. If I feel safe and secure up there I will do my best not to bottle it, the next thing is to get the rest of the board of trustees to sponsor me.”

Mr Terry signed up the the challenge with the help of Havens Hospices challenge fundraiser Emma Hamilton.

He said: “I was at the colour run in September with Andrea and was covered in paint when Emma asked if I would be up for doing it. If it was any other time I would have said no but I got caught in the moment. I said if she did then I would, I think reluctantly she said yes as well.”

The group have six months to get ready for the high-flying challenge which takes place at Damyns Hall Aerodrome Hall un Upminster on June 18.

Emma said: “When I asked Brian I never expected him to say yes! I was put on the spot as much as he was and we both just agreed to do it in a moment of madness. This is the first Wing Walk we have organised and already it’s getting a lot of interest as it is such a different challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to it as I’ve never done anything like it before. We’ll be strapped to the top of a plane going at 130mph but it’ll be such an adrenaline rush. Hopefully there will be a big group of us and we can all encourage each other on the day.”

Havens Hospices needs to raise £100,000 a week to continue its care for adults and children at its hospices in Westcliff and Thundersley.

To wing walk you must be no heavier than 12 stone 10 pounds (81kg) and between 18-65 years of age. You can wing walk between 65-75 years of age but you would need a GP’s declaration of good health.
