Autistic pair sleep in tents

DESPERATE homeless youngsters have set up a campsite in woods in Pitsea because they have nowhere else to go.

Autistic Scott McCarthy, 20, pitched his tent among the trees, off Ashlyns, nearly three weeks ago and was joined days later by Natalie Cobban, 19, and a third person, who does not wish to be named or photographed.

They all say Basildon Council told them they can not be rehoused.

So they have built their own community with two tents, one of which is suspended in the trees, a covered communal area and a fireplace.

But the council is threatening to move them on.

Scott, who grew up in Pitsea, said: "I don't have a plan of action. I will just stay here until I'm housed or they get a court order.

"I would say to anyone out there, don't rely on the council. They are a waste of time."

Scott has been homeless since splitting with his girlfriend a couple of months ago, but he can't go back to his mum's because there is not enough room.

Natalie, who is also autistic and originally from Nottingham, spent seven months sleeping on the couch in a friend's bedsit in Basildon before she was forced to move to the campsite.

She said: "I've had three assessments, but the council said it can't do anything.

"It is willing to put you up for a night in a bed and breakfast, but that is not really appropriate.

"I'm angry. We are having to fight to get anything. But we will keep on fighting."

The campsite is hidden from the road and a row of shops nearby.

The group has a fire going most nights to help them keep warm and heat food.

Scott also has the stress of looking for a new job.

He was fired on Tuesday for turning up late after spending the night in a police cell for possessing a knife he uses for cooking and eating.

He was not charged.

Scott also says he was taking a lot of time off work to try to find a place to rent.

He said: "On top of everything I now have to look for a new job.

"You think we would get extra help because we're autistic, but no-one seems to care.

"I walk round the estate and there are loads of empty places. I think there is a lot more the council could be doing for us."

I have to agree 100% with that, I was homeless and Basildon Council said there was nothing they could do, the woman who assessed me told me I was to go to the main desk and ask for a confimration letter, the same woman then phoned the desk in advance before I got there and told the woman behind the desk to catagorise me as not homeless, I was fuming, and my taxes go towards that!? from that day on I swore never to pay Council tax again, and havent since

Are we living in the 21st century or the 16th century?

Is this what this country has become?

We now have people living rough sleeping in tents while we provide houses for people who haven't been in the country for more than two minutes or have a criminal record as long as your arm.

They always manage to find secure homes for members of the Tufty Club as well.

Although any mother who lets their son sleep rough isn't much of a mother.

Is there more to this story than meets the eye...?

I'm angry cos I must be a f****** mug. I work hard, pay all my taxes, bills, mortgage and have never expected a handout in my life.

My message to these wasters is 'get a job, take responsibility for your actions and stop blaming every other person for all thats bad in your life'.

Gail, Basildon says...
1:42pm Thu 17 May 07

Scott's parents should let him sleep on the sofa and natalie should go back to Nottingham instead of trying to get a flat down here.

Whos gonna employ a homeless person? use your brain before you type garbage like that, alot of homeless people look harder than anybody for jobs, but no employer is gonna hire somebody who sleeps rough

Scott's Mum, Basildon says...
2:23pm Thu 17 May 07

TO GAIL IN BASILDON...can you not read?As Scott stated in his interview,he cannot come here..there are now 5 of us in our 3 bedroomed house since my step-children moved in over a year after Scott moved out..and if he did sleep on the sofa here he would never have a chance of getting somewhere of his own to live...
AND TO EMMA IN PITSEAdid you not read the bit about Scott losing his job basically because he is now homeless?
I'm glad you think this is all so easy to remedy, and I'm glad you all think that this is all my fault...at least you then don't have to blame your beloved council who stated that
there are no people sleeping rough on Basildon streets(Yesterday's Echo)
.Just pray that it never happens to you or yours...

Gary, Pitsea says...
2:26pm Thu 17 May 07

well i know scott and natalie personally i have spent time helping them both out and they do try but if you think and put your brain in gear you might actually understand why they are there

tina, basildon says...
2:27pm Thu 17 May 07

well then surely he can take his previous employers to the tribunral because they cant sack him just because he is homeless

Gail, Basildon says...
2:33pm Thu 17 May 07

TO SCOTT'S MUM, I dont need to pray this wouldnt happen to me as I would rather be over crowded and know that my children were safe than have than have them sleep rough where anything could happen to them and if Scott was living at home he wouldnt of lost his job over crowded or not. I'm sorry if this offends you but I don't see where you are coming from, your childs safety and wellbeing should come first.

Maggie, pitsea says...
2:35pm Thu 17 May 07

will if you get to know natalie and scott like i do then u would like to help them as well neither of them need this after every thing they have both gone through. natalie is here due to domestic violence from her family because she is autistic and scott is getting accused of something he hasn't done so i think you should all think about how you would feel if you were in there shoes

Dave, Basildon says...
2:44pm Thu 17 May 07

I have know Scott for a few years and he is a really nice guy it a shame that the F****** council don't pull their fingers out, as for Natalie well I have only know her for a short period of time and she is a very troubled person due to her family abusing her up until she came down her, and you can see that though the self harm she has done to herself, and for the 3rd person that is announced she is staying with me i would let the other 2 stay with me but it is over crowded. Now i have been on the council list for 2 years and apparently I am considered as "High priority" we have 7 people living in a 3 bedroom house tell you what council do your f****** jobs for a change and actually reduce those figure and not just putting it down on paper and show us proof, I do apologize for the fowl language but the council really know how to push my button.

canvasser, in-tents says...
2:57pm Thu 17 May 07

my advice to these two is to move to southend, we already have a camp where you can set up home and the council will not move you on. just pretend you are looking after our heritage.

Gail, Basildon says...
3:03pm Thu 17 May 07

If these people dont have an address to enable them to work, do they still get benefit or is an address required for that.

Basildon Billy, says...
3:06pm Thu 17 May 07

Biggest ****-take is that if scott has previously worked he'd have been paying council tax to house other people aswell as the wages of the people who said they cant help him

Scott's Mum, Basildon says...
3:18pm Thu 17 May 07

that's exactly the thing Billy, even though Scott was statmented at school he got himself a job,and has worked to keep his family, paid hid taxes and never claimed hand-outs,but now he needs the help of others that have done exactly the same as him he is shunned...just because he split with his girlfriend and had to move out so his family still had a roof over their heads...and as for benefits,I am under the impression you have to have a permanant address to claim them...don't know, never had to claim them (family trait obviously)

The Vicar, says...
3:21pm Thu 17 May 07

Scott's Mum: is there not a single relative of yours that could take Scott in?

Is there no room on any of the three bedroom floors to sleep on?

Gary (scotts and natalies friend), pitsea says...
3:27pm Thu 17 May 07

well i hope that now people know that they are there things might actually get sorted and i would also like to thank the people in the local area that have helped him survive this long. but i would also like to say that some off the police that have attended the camp site have been really nice but you have also had officers turn up and just want to cause trouble and search for some reason to arrest somebody there

Even a tent in the back garden!

Perhaps they should take a leaf (sorry Essex Police) out of Eastenders. Some of those houses are only two bedroom but they manage to house about 15 generations of family.

You can't tell me there isn't room somewhere for a sleeping bag.

What right have you to imply that these people are smoking weed and all sorts? And what exactly do you mean by all sorts?

Rita, says...
3:53pm Thu 17 May 07

Vicar - you're right - Pat Butcher ALWAYS has enough room in her house in 'enders!

Local Boy - you should be aware of Tony's style of "humour" by now...

Most of the things Tony writes would get a laugh if they were said by, say, David Brent from The Office - yes a cringe here and there but still a laugh. I really don't think Tony is being vindictive or unkind but I can appreciate others' shock at some of his comments.

Peter, Southend-on-Sea says...

Why dont they pitch their tents in Europe's biggest free campsite at Cray's Hill / Dale Farm ?
They could then get a 'cash in hand' job (tarmac'in drives)& claim benifits in the same way all the other holiday makers their have!

Rita, says...
4:04pm Thu 17 May 07

Peter - it's not really a "free" campsite - after all the travellers own the land, they just shouldn't have built on it....

If this guys family had been travellers then I can almost guarantee he would have been looked after by at least one member of said family.

Befor scot lost his job he only wanted a council property to rent he ddnt want no hand outs so all you that have comented negativly take a good hard look at your self because you havent done anything to help this problem and i bet all of you live in council properts and half of you are on the dole. All the council said is to try and lodge but no one trusts a lodger under 25 so his screwed!! now wot?

Walby, where have you been? We've missed you!!!
Fact 1. If you are a single male then the council will do sweet f.a to help you and under current homeless legislation do not have a legal requirement to do so.

Fact 2. Male or female, if you present to your local council with a medical condition, ie autism and he has been statemented then the council has a legal obligation to help him with temporary accomodation My thinking on this is if he was charged with a knife offence then they will not do it as many temp accomodation is a hostel with children in. They are within legal rights to deny him of this if they consider his criminal conviction to be a risk to others.
For the young lady in question if she is fleeing domestic violence as claimed then again the council have a legal obligation to temp house, if she has a medical condition then again this adds to her case.
Also she can approach womens aid, that is what they are there for.
It is not for anyone here to judge these people and it is easy to sit in our cosy homes in front of our pc's sitting in judgement. This could happen to anyone of us. In London most of the homeless are people who have served this country, put there lives on the line and when they leave they are tossed aside, just like children who leave the care system. Not all homeless are junkies or sit there smoking weed. Oh and another thing, not all crime is done by eastern europeans and travellers, there is not a travelling family that would sit back and let this happen to a member of there family, that I would put money on.

You are aware that any eastern european with a crminal record can enter this country just as any other person can dont you? you may have met a hard-working minority of immigrants but the fact is thousands of eastern european crminals have decided that instead of living in poverty where they are, they would rather enter the UK, where we have no record of their crimes, to further their criminal careers, as if they are caught, the prison cell they will be living in is alot better than their own home, and if they arnt caught, they have a garunteed £90 a fortnight in their pocket from benefits, free healthcare, free housing, etc why would they possibly stay in their own country to steal from other poor people?

Well said Billy. As for Local Boy, I thought I was having a conversation with Rod Hull and Emu, he obviously has his head in the sand. I wonder if he knows that council taxes could have to rise because of a massive underestimate in the number of immigrants coming to Britain. Charity begins at home as far as I'm concerned.

Fact is, if u believe all immigrants that come here are hard-working, honest people that just want to be accepted into our society your incredibally naive, imagine if it was the other way round, imagine if france decided all immigants could claim benefits of £150 a week, the law was more relaxed, you didnt have to pay for housing, dental, healthcare, etc was all free, your criminal record was scrapped, you could claim child benefit for your children back home, who they cant prove doesnt exist, they made no effort to make u work, prison was like a hotel, you could sue and claim your human rights have been infringed if anything doesnt go your way, every argos-jewellery-wear
ing lout and chav would be on the first ferry to calais, we are basically offering that to every country in europe, hence the fact about 70% of the people in UK prisons are immigrants

Usual clap trap from the "blame everything on the foreigners brigade"

Check your facts, the home office statistics on prison population are published and you will see that 84% of the male prison population is white and British.

Check your facts, the home office's statistics were described as "frightfully inaccurate" after they claimed that 2% of the UK's population was non-white, something even black people found hilarious. the home office are constantly being critisised for trying to mislead the public with their statistics, most politicians dont even see home office stats as reliable

Usual clap trap from the "blame everything on the foreigners brigade" Check your facts, the home office statistics on prison population are published and you will see that 84% of the male prison population is white and British.

As we are dealing with facts Basildon Billy, how many politicians make up "most". Is that 1 MP or 2 MPs, is it 300+ MPs, are you including local councillors and county councillors. Do you include aspiring politicans who are hoping to be elected? Is the hous of lords included?

If you are going to quote facts you need them to be meaningful and specific not a wandering generality.

Basildon Billy, says...
10:47am Fri 18 May 07

I dont know the exact number, I just read they are not being acepted as reliable anymore, and many havent ever seen them as reliable, they are grossly under-estimated. last year, their stats said there were 93 registered polish plumbers in the UK, the people who doubted the evidence made an ad in a paper and had more than 100 calls the day the ad went out from registered polish plumbers in that 1 area alone, not to mention the un registered ones & the rest of the UK. the government wont ever give us the real stats, it damages their reputation too much and shows their immense failure.

quite frankly, for you to quote an official statistic shows you have no idea what your talking about

I don't have to argue my points they are staring at you in the face. The comments I made were fact. These people come over here with nothing, we give them everything they need and the majority of them repay us back by the crimes that I mentioned earlier (ALL FACT). There are British people living here who are on the streets with nothing and get nothing. It stinks!

Local boy, if you know about facts, you would know that nearly HALF of the UK's hospitals are due to close in the comming years because they cant afford to stay open anymore, why? because barely any of our taxes go towards hospitals anymore, we dont have enough hospitals as it is, imagine how we are going to cope with half the amount of hospitals and about 10 times the amount of people...it makes me sick, angry, im f##king furious, last year they predicted 48,000 immigrants, we had 600,000 and still they wont put any kind of restrictions on the amount of people that can enter the UK, unless you can afford to go private, your gonna be having healthcare services on-par with 3rd world countries in 10 years

Basildon Billy, says...
11:49am Fri 18 May 07

OK, now find me 1 immigrant who abides by those rules.

from when a woman claimed asylum in the UK because she was "too tall" to live in pakistan I gave up on expecting these rules to be enforced, if you dont qualify for immigration, they simply send you away and tell you to return to a certain place on a certain date, which they hardly ever do

Local Boy, Hawkwell says...
12:13pm Fri 18 May 07

You read those rules in 6 minutes Billy?

I do apologise I stated earlier that to find out facts took hard work. If you assimilated all 13 parts, 395 clauses and 5 appendices in 6 minutes I'm clearly dealing with a genius.

If an immigrant is in this country legally, by default they have adhered to the rules.

One example of an imigrant abusing the system does not mean they all do it.

If that is the case then I will happily state that the reasons A&E's are closing (something I'm worried about) is due to the number of drunk british slobs who end up at A&E early mornings Fridays and Saturdays. Or is it because we plan to throw out all the immigrants who keep our NHS running?

Melody, Portsmouth says...
12:22pm Fri 18 May 07

There are always two sides to every story;as I stated earlier I am not saying that crime is not commited by immigrants;however my experience of immigrants/people seeking asylum, has obviously been different from yours which is a part of why we hold such opposing views. What concerns me though is the reason for such vitriol directed to certain members of the community;surely your anger should be directed at the policy makers;and do you also have the same level of anger towards people who commit crime regardless of ethnicity?

Are you stupid or just trying to provoke a reaction? you are right in as much as there is no reason on earth anyone should be homeless or poor in this country, but the facts are that they are. It is hard to get on the property ladder, deposits, rent in advance, all don't come cheaply. What is poverty in your eyes? Is that not all relative? How far does £100 go nowadays? Not far if you take into account gas, electric etc. Even if someone isn't working and they get benefits, it is only enough to exist on, not live.

The only people who have been slagging off that family have been his own friends and family.

They are the ones accusing him of beating his girlfriend up and other indiscretions.

Hi Vicar im the Rev I can understand what ur goin on about but on the other hand get a life u said idiot, for the family and friends of the 2 individuals to come here and hope to make a differance and to have some pathetic lil sado that crawled out from under a very **** rock to bad mouth ppl that they dont even kno is crap. If u got an opinion come say it to one of us friends or one of the family and stop wasting space on this forum!! The Reverend Says Amen, Now Can I Hear A Hallelujah From The People?? God Bless </b>
They aren't making a difference though, Rev. They want something for nothing and are washing their dirty laundry in public. Want, want, want - that's what

It was all THEIR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES who was slagging them off so get your facts right.

They HAVE somewhere to stay they are just choosing not to.

The only sad, pathetic little idiots are the ones camping outside.

Sorry, Rev, I didn't realise the Echo Forums was for the exclusive use of the McCarthy family and all their ACCUSING friends.

Bless you anyway ;)

Basildon council are quick to offer the new homes that will be built on the old james hornsby school site(laindon high rd) to people from hackney who will need to be relocated from the olympic village site, but these houses should be offered to local people first, Money really does talk doesn't it basildon council.

Yes - I can't be the only one to have noticed the "Hackney Drift" in Basildon.

So much for looking after your own electorate.

all these people slagging off scott are a bunch of losers that need to realise not everything is a simple as they think. most people are reading this thinking it is a typical case of someone wanting to sponge of the council but it aint, i think people should leave Scott and his family alone to sort out there problems themselves.

How am I slagging off people by this comment?. If they didn't want the attention then they shouldn't have gone to the press...End of!

I have not slagged anyone off here or anywhere else. I have only stated facts and if you bother to read all of the comments correctly you will see that I was offering advice and if they do not want people to comment on there lifestyle then they shouldn't have it out there for public fodder.

Been there mate. I was made homeless after I was evicted for not being able to keep up with the rent (thanks!! LHA scheme). Anyway went to council and asked for help they asked if i was an alcholic, mental illness, a convict or have children which I replied no to all and with that said we can't help u then because your not vunerable (so much for all the tax I paid as a good citizen, dont know why I bothered)who then gave me a sheet with contact no.'s for hostels etc.. no luck there. Had already signed with local housing association and ask me being homeless changed my priority which they said no, they said there was a waiting list of about 2 yrs. Bottom line is if your not classed as vunerable and left on the street to die the sad reality of today's society so much for community welfare through taxation.
