SOUTHEND Pier has been a enduring landmark of the seafront for more than 100 years.
Take a look at some of these pictures of the pier from the 20th century.
The pier was presided over by a Pier Master, always a former seaman. William Chignell was the first Pier Master to be appointed; The diver was a full-time pier employee. In this picture, from c1910, he descends for one of his regular structural inspections.
