TAKE a trip back in time on the steam-powered Cathedrals Express next month.

Departing from Southend East, the train will visit one of Europe’s best Christmas Markets in Winchester.

Passengers on the 61306 Mayflower, a B1 Class locomotive, will arrive in the cathedral city of Winchester at around 1.45pm on December 19 and have nearly three hours to explore the market before the train departs back to Southend.

Marcus Robertson, chairman of Steam Dreams, said: “A trip on The Cathedrals Express at Christmas time is a unique experience - there’s always a fabulous festive atmosphere on board and to arrive at Winchester behind steam makes it a really special occasion.

“Those wishing to make a real day of it can also enjoy a champagne breakfast and a four or five course meal on board, in our Premier and Pullman Style Dining carriages.”

The train departs Southend East at 9.10am and skirts around London before heading south west into Hampshire.

The market is inspired by traditional German Christmas markets and boasts more than 80 wooden chalet style stalls selling unique hand-crafted gifts, decorations and festive foods.

Winchester also has an ice rink at its heart and visitors are recommended to visit the city’s cathedral.

Tickets for the trip can be bought in four classes, starting at £99.

Passengers will be seated at tables of four with white tablecloths and complimentary tea and coffee for the cheapest fares, with a champagne breakfast and five course dinner available for those willing to pay £239 for a ticket.

All the carriages will be decorated for the season and passengers will also be served mulled wine and mince pies.
