PLANS for a huge business park on Canvey which would create more than 1,000 new jobs look set to go ahead.

Officers at Castle Point Council have backed Inner London Group’s proposals for the park to be built across two separate sites – opposite Morrisons, in Northwick Road, and off Roscommon Way, south of Charfleets Industrial Estate.

Cross-party councillors will vote on the plans at a meeting next month.

The ambitious project would require a disused pumping station on the 7.41 hectare site to be demolished.

Inner London aims to start work by March 2016, should the plans get the green light as recommended by officers.

Castle Point Council's planning department believes the island lacks employment opportunities, and hopes the business park can make up for the shortfall.

In a report, planning officer Ishita Sheth said: “The Castle Point employment and retail needs assessment 2012, identified the borough has less employment space overall than all neighbouring boroughs.

The assessment identifies there is demand for industrial space in Castle Point generally, but little available supply.

“Much of the stock is identified as old and unsuited to current needs, with few larger units and little modern stock.

“There are indications local firms may find it hard to expand or upgrade premises without moving out of the borough.”

Objections were lodged by Canvey Town Council and the Essex Field Club, on the grounds the island’s infrastructure would not be able to cope, and the site is occupied by wildlife not highlighted in an ecological report. David Burch, policy director at Essex Chamber of Commerce, is delighted with the potential job prospects for residents on Canvey.

He said: “We would welcome anything that brings new employment opportunities to the island.

“Canvey is rather isolated, both from Southend and Thurrock, and a large number of residents have to travel off the island for work.

“So it would be worthwhile if suitable jobs can be created on Canvey.

“I am delighted officers have recommended this project for approval.”
