STUDENTS will be able to learn make-up for stage and screen – thanks to expansion at a Canvey training centre.

The Beauty Skills Academy, based at the Canvey Skills Campus, inMeppel Avenue, will launch two courses for media and theatre in the next academic year.

Currently, the academy offers hair and beauty courses for 16 to 18-year-olds looking to train and start a career in the profession.

From September 2016, the college will offer hair and media make up courses, as well as theatrical make-up.

Jane Houghton, academy manager, said: “This is a purpose- built facility and it is a fulltime study programme – the same as going to college.”

The academy, based on Canvey for three years, used to work with students from Seevic College, in Kiln Road, Thundersley. It has joined forces with Central Training Group this year.

Ms Houghton said the industry was expanding, and hairdressers and make-up artists were in demand.

She added: “I think the industry, particularly the make-up industry, is booming. You’ve only got to walk into Debenhams and walk past the make-up counter to see that.

“There are a lot of prospects and if students are trained to a high standard- then they are sought after by employers.”

The academy is also looking for models to have hair and beauty treatments at a reduced price.
