A TEENAGER was arrested after a ten mile police chase involving a stolen golf buggy came to a halt.

The buggy was seen on roads across Canvey and Basildon after being stolen from Castle Point Golf Club, in Somnes Avenue, on Monday afternoon.

It eventually stopped in Corona Road, Langdon Hills- ten miles away.

Eyewitnesses told the Echo they saw police following closely behind.

A stay-at-home mum, who saw the drama unfold while on her way to the shops, said she had never seen anything “so absurd.”

Sarah Roberts, 46, of Lincefield, Langdon Hills, said: “It was wet outside and I was in a rush but in the corner of my eye I thought I saw a golf buggy.

“I thought I was going mad.

“I turned around and there was a golf buggy going down the road really slowly.

“I’ve never seen anything so absurd in all of my life.

“Soon afterwards I saw two police cars going past. It looked like they were escorting the cart because they were going so slow."

Linda Lambert, who spotted the buggy in Rainbow Road, Canvey, on her way home from work, added: "I could not believe my eyes."

A spokesman for the golf club said it was unclear how the cart was taken, but confirmed it was gone for over two hours before officers returned it.

The club will carry out enquiries to find out how it was possible for the cart to be taken off site.

Shocked eyewitnesses took to Facebook after spotting the buggy on the run.

It was spotted racing past Castle View School, in Foksville Road, Canvey, and down Zelham Drive.

The cart was also spotted in Florence Way, Langdon Hills.

An Essex Police spokesman said a 14-year-old boy, from Canvey, had been arrested in connection with the incident.

He was taken to Rayleigh police station, where he remained for questioning at the time the Echo went to print.

The spokesman said: “Police were contacted shortly before 5.15pm on Monday following reports that a golf buggy was stolen from Castle Point Golf Club.

“Officers carried out a search of the area and a 14-year-old boy from Canvey was arrested on suspicion of theft.

“The buggy was recovered in Corona Road, Langdon Hills.

“The boy has been taken to Rayleigh Police Station for interview.”
