CREMATORIUM managers said they are "determined" to put a stop to thieves stealing sentimental funeral flowers following a recent spate.

A selection of floral flowers have been snatched from the courtyard at Basildon Crematorium, in Church Road, Bowers Gifford.

The flowers had been left overnight after families paid their last respects to their loved ones.

In one incident, a £45 custom made white and purple pillow-shaped floral tribute for Margaret Herrman, 83, who died after a short illness, were taken.

An elephant-shaped bouquet of flowers, in tribute to Dunton Hills Golf Course greenkeeper David Simcock, 74, were also snatched.

Laura Emerick, 30, was devastated to discover that a selection of flowers in tribute to her dad Gary, of Shoreditch Road, Canvey, had been taken after his funeral on Thursday, March 24.

They included the word 'granddad' created out of flowers.

Mrs Emerick said: "When I found out what had happened, I was absolutely devastated. I sat on my bed and cried all day.

"I was absolutely heartbroken.

"They are picking on people who are vulnerable because they are grieving."

John Stevens, crematorium manager, said that CCTV cameras have been installed in the grounds in a bid to deter thieves.

They are currently reviewing the footage to try and identify the perpetrators.

He said: "In recent weeks, there have been some instances of floral tributes being stolen from the crematorium grounds. This can be deeply upsetting to families and we are determined to put a stop to these anti-social crimes.

"We have reported the incidents to the police.

"CCTV is installed at the crematorium and we are currently reviewing footage.

"We would call on all members of the public to be vigilant and keep an eye out for the possible perpetrators of these crimes."

He urged any families affected by the thefts or with information to contact him on 01268 584411.

Since the Echo reported on the thefts, more people have revealed that they have also fallen victim to the callous thieves.

Anyone with information can call Essex Police on 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
