COMMUTERS could save 50 per cent from their annual parking bill after Basildon Council agreed to slash charges.

The authority is offering annual season tickets for the Wickford main car park for £395 if they are bought in 2016.

Commuters and town centre workers currently pay £790 a year.

In 2017 annual tickets for the car park, next to Wickford High Street, will be available with a 25 per cent discount off the full rate.

Terri Sargent, councillor responsible for environment and community services, said: “Providing affordable, local parking to Wickford High Street is key to helping the local economy grow, and will encourage more regular visitors into the town to enjoy the shopping and leisure opportunities in Wickford. This is a great bonus for commuters as well as workers based within the High Street, so I urge people to take this opportunity as soon as possible to make a substantial saving.”

The discount is available for current season ticket holders, and reduced fees will also be offered on month, three month, and six months tickets.

Private car parks in Wickford could cost drivers as much as £3,825 for a year.

The Echo revealed last month the council was considering slashing its season ticket fees in a bid to increase up-take.

Last year just seven out of 80 spaces at the Wickford car park were sold, according to council documents.

The reduced rate season tickets are being offered on a first come first served basis.
