AN AMERICAN student has come to stay with treavellers at Dale Farm.

Zachary Scott, 26, a masters degree student at George Town, Washington, has taken time out to live at the illegally-built site and help fight the eviction.

The trip was arranged by Washington based human rights group the Advocacy Project following a visit by its boss Iain Guest last year.

Mr Scott, who is funding the project himself, was chosen because of his previous international work with Romany gipsies.

He said: "It has cost around £1,000 to get here, but I have my own caravan on site. The community is very fearful of eviction. The first goal is to try to prevent one. Preparing for the meeting has been my first job."

He said his long-term goal is to end "prejudice and racism".

"We have to solve the root causes and forge links with other traveller and roma groups," he added.
