A WOMAN suffered a serious leg injury after she got stuck under a car as her husband tried to pick her up.

The unfortunate accident happened at about 2pm on Tuesday opposite Chinnery’s pub in Marine Parade, Southend.

Police closed the road while the woman, in her late 50s, was treated by paramedics.

She was later taken to Southend Hospital.

Lisa Smith, 28, of Whitmore Way, Laindon, witnessed the aftermath of the accident while drinking outside the pub.

She said: “We heard a screech and turned around and saw a silver car.

“An older gentleman who I assumed was driving got out. We didn’t think anything much was wrong until a cop car and two ambulances turned up.

“I walked over the road to see what happened.

“There was a woman, who I would say was between 50 or 60 years old, underneath the middle of the car.

“She had tried to get in without the car stopping completely.”

Miss Smith said the woman was in obvious pain although she did appear to be seriously injured.

She said: “There was a bit of screaming at first. She was in pain and very, very, shocked, although she was quite chilled out and relaxed at the same time.

“All you could see was from her waist upwards, the rest of her was under the car.

“I don’t think she had gone under the wheels, she just got stuck somehow.

“It’s very hard to understand how it happened.”

Miss Smith said the driver did not do a lot during the woman’s ordeal but also appeared to be shocked.

She said: “It’s not surprising really. Your wife being stuck under your car is not the best situation.”

An ambulance service spokesman said the woman was treated at the scene and later taken to hospital

He said: “The East of England Ambulance Service NHS Trust (EEAST) received a call at 2.05pm to Marine Parade, Southend.

“A rapid response vehicle and ambulance crew attended who treated one patient with a serious leg injury.

“The patient was taken to Southend Hospital for further treatment.”
