More people were arrested over the weekend as police crackdown on motorists drink and drug driving.

Across the county, 29 men and five women were arrested on suspicion of drink or drug related offences between Friday, June 24 and Sunday, June 26 as part of the summer campaign.

Since the launch of the campaign on June 10, 104 people have been arrested.

From the weekend arrests, 13 people have been charged.

Ion Pop, of Malgreaves, Pitsea, was charged with drink driving and is due to appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on July 12.

The 30-year-old was arrested at Southmayne, Basildon just before 2am on Sunday.

Christopher Shepherd, 44, of Kenley Close, Wickford, was also charged with drink driving as well as driving otherwise than in accordance with the terms of his licence and is due to appear at the same court on July 26.

He was arrested at London Road, Wickford at 6.30pm on Friday.

Two drivers have been charged with failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis when required to do so.

Janine Chinery, 31, of Limes Avenue, Chigwell, was arrested in Cranes Farm Road, Basildon, just before 2am on Sunday and will appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on July 12.

Willies Nyathi, 36, of Bluebell Close, Romford, was arrested on the A1245 at Rayleigh at 4.30am on Sunday and will appear in court on the same day.

Adam Pipe, casualty reduction manager at Essex Police, said: "I hope these arrests send out a clear message to drivers thinking about getting behind the wheel under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

"Our officers are out there and they will catch you.

"If you drink and/or take drugs, be warned – it really is only a matter of time before you’re arrested and put before the courts.”
