MAJOR traffic disruption is expected for the next 18 weeks after work to replace a gas main got underway at the weekend.

A series of road closures will be put in place affecting The Fairway, in Leigh, over the next four months.

The road is a major route between Leigh and the A127.

The first phase of the closure was put in place on Saturday morning, between Eastwood Road North and Moor Park Gardens.

The second phase of the closure will see the section from Moor Park Gardens to the A127 closed off.

Julian Ware-Lane, a councillor on the traffic and parking working party, said he has serious concerns about the suitability of Bellhouse Lane as a diversionary route.

He said: “This subject came up at full council on Thursday and the portfolio holder made a number of comments about how much work had been undertaken.

“My biggest issue was about the diversion routes.

“I certainly think the disruption will be noticeable. I think people will have to think carefully about planning some of their journeys.

“Bellhouse Lane is just not geared up for it. But saying that, we are in the school holidays so I’m hoping that the initial disruption will be pretty minimal.”

The work is the largest main renewal National Grid has undertaken in the borough since an eight-year programme started four years ago.

The gas main is 18 inches in diameter and requires a deep excavation.

During the first phase, the right-hand filter lane off of the A127 towards Leigh will still be in use, with vehicles diverted off of The Fairway to Bellhouse Lane, via Moor Park Gardens.

Vehicles will also be able to use the right hand filter lane at Bellhouse Lane.

The section of The Fairway between Eastwood Road North and Moor Park Gardens will be re-opened once the first phase has been completed but there will be no access to the A127 due to the phase two works.
