NIGHTCLUB bouncers who fought to save the life of a young clubber who collapsed outside were praised for their quick-thinking actions.

Workers at Chameleon nightclub in Lucy Road, Southend, gave CPR to tragic William Moss for more than 25 minutes while they waited for an ambulance to arrive.

Doorman Nick Singer said: “I had finished my shift at another place and had just come to Talk.

“I had just got there and saw door staff were dealing with someone who needed first aid in the road.

“I went over there because I’m quite effective at first aid because of my history with the RNLI.

“I did recognise him because I have been around for 12 years. I knew he was a local.

“I asked him a couple of questions and I could see that he wasn’t being responsive.

“We then noticed that he had stopped breathing and we couldn’t really find a pulse so we started CPR.

“I was doing it until the ambulance came.”

Although an ambulance was first called at 1.42am, call handlers allowed a 30 minute response time because Mr Moss was still conscious and breathing.

The service received another call at 2.14am and the ambulance arrived at 2.24am.

Mr Singer said: “I wasn’t looking at my watch but it felt like forever.

“I carried on until they got there. They needed to get the machines out and on and they wanted me to carry on.

“Then they took over and that was it.

“I finished my shift and then went down to the hospital. I was there until about 6.30am and left a couple of minutes after he sadly passed away.

“I don’t know the targets of the ambulance service and blaming them isn’t going to help anyone, but it felt like a long time.

“I know the ambulance had been called by the time I got there.

“But the police also took a long time to get there – they turned up after the ambulance.”

Mr Moss’s friend, Luke Baker, was with him during the resuscitation attempts and praised Mr Singer and his colleagues.

He said: “The door staff at Chameleon nightclub were amazing. They did everything they could to keep will alive.”

He added: “I want to thank all the people at Chameleon night club for acting so quick and trying to help Will, especially the night club staff member who was giving Will CPR.

“He was a coast guard for many years and he took control of the situation very well, and also for the owner of Chameleon coming to the hospital at 3.30 to wish his best to Will and his family.”

Mr Baker quickly set up an online fundraising page to help towards the costs of Mr Moss’s funeral.

By yesterday afternoon, the page had raised more than £1,800 of a £2,200 target.

Ambulance bosses defend 50-minute wait

WILLIAM Moss died at Southend Hospital several hours after enduring a 50 minute wait for an ambulance.

However, ambulance bosses maintain the call was answered within the target times.

The first call came in at 1.42am to a man who was conscious and breathing and was coded with a target of responding in 30 minutes.

Although this was not met, an ambulance spokesman said guidelines meant failures are permitted up to 25 per cent of the time.

He said: “We send our condolences to his family and friends and if they have questions and concerns they can contact us and we can answer them.

“The original call came in as a serious but not life-threatening call. As soon as we got the call to say he was in cardiac arrest we were on the scene in ten minutes.”
